"I Am a Sex Addict," a fictionalized documentary that finds truth in lies, is an essay on promiscuity — of the body, mind and movies. Written and directed by Caveh Zahedi, this liberated video refracts the author's 20-year obsession with prostitutes through a kaleidoscope of comedy, confession, memoir and exorcism. Mr. Zahedi begins by speaking to us from a wedding, his third, then backtracks through his history of relationships with women, a few of whom he lived with and loved, but mostly the type you get to know for 10 minutes in the back seat of a car. A grasshopper of a man, all twiggy limbs and big black eyes, Mr. Zahedi is charming and disarming even at his most debased. The movie is a minor triumph of sincerity, neatly skirting the pitfalls of narcissism and unexamined misogyny.
