Sir Clifford Chatterley, a wealthy pit owner, is wheelchair bound as a result of wounds sustained during the war. His wife Constance continues to love him even though their conjugal life is at an end. Sir Clifford is so desperate for an heir to his great fortune that he suggests his wife should become pregnant by another man. Constance is shocked by this proposal; she cannot bear the idea of being unfaithful to her husband. Then she meets Mellors, Sir Clifford’s gamekeeper. Lady Chatterley cannot help being drawn to the muscular young man, and he is equally taken with her. Within no time, they are pursuing a passionate love affair, blind to the difference in their social status and to the scandal that may arise if their affair were ever to be discovered. The unexpected return of Mellors’ estranged wife brings a brutal end to their idyllic affair. Intent on revenge, she betrays Mellors to his employer. When she returns to England after an extended stay in Venice, Lady Chatterley must reveal to her husband that she is pregnant, by his gamekeeper…

Lord Chatterley revient infirme de la guerre. Hilda, jeune divorcée, conseille à sa soeur, Lady Chatterley, de prendre un amant. Mais Constance est décidée à rester fidèle à son mari, cloué à son fauteuil d'infirmé. Celui-ci, avec une énergie farouche, veut avoir un héritier et demande à sa femme de chercher hors de son foyer le fils qu'il ne peut lui donner en raison de ses infirmités. Un voyage à Venise est prévu pour cela, auquel Constance ne peut se résoudre.

Peu à peu, dans son esprit, la fidélité conjugale fait place à un désir de liberté. La rencontre avec le nouveau garde-chasse, Melors, achève de justifier à ses yeux la proposition de son mari. D'abord prise au jeu, elle devient amoureuse de cet homme frustre et solitaire qui l'initie à l'amour. Quand elle voudra rompre, il sera trop tard. Trop tard pour faire comprendre à son marî les conséquences funestes de ses conseils et pour lui faire admettre une liaison avec un homme de basse condition ; trop tard pour retrouver l'idéal de son foyer ; trop tard pour échapper à une vie nouvelle qui lui semble le chemin du bonheur. Dans le scandale, provoqué par l'ancienne femme du garde-chasse, elle quitte le petit village minier où le Lord règne en maître.
