Bandits de profession, Joe Blake et Terry Collins s'évadent de prison avec comme unique ambition de cambrioler quelques banques pour ensuite s'installer au Mexique et s'assurer une retraite paisible. Ces Robin des bois des temps modernes sont devenus en quelque temps les coqueluches des Etats-Unis. Ils ont pour habitude de prendre en otage le directeur de la banque et sa famille la veille d'un hold-up, de dîner et de passer la nuit chez eux, pour ensuite se rendre à la banque avec le directeur le lendemain matin, avant l'heure d'ouverture. Ainsi, pas d'effraction, ni de mauvaise surprise ! Jusqu'au jour où leur route croise celle d'une charmante otage, Kate Wheeler. À leur grand étonnement, celle-ci se montre enthousiaste à l'idée de les suivre dans leurs aventures. Sa fougue et son engouement pour leur cause conquièrent bientôt le coeur des deux hors-la-loi.

A charismatic convict (Bruce Willis) and a hypochondriac inmate (Billy Bob Thornton) break out of prison in a cement truck and immediately start a bank robbing spree. Becoming known as the "Sleepover Bandits", the two kidnap bank managers the night before their robbery, spend the night with their families, and then all go to the bank in the morning to get the dough. Using a dim-witted stunt man (Troy Garrity) as their getaway driver and lookout, the three successfully pull off several jobs that gets them recognition on a tv show about America's criminals. When a bored housewife (Cate Blanchett) with a failing marriage decides to runaway, she ends up in the hands of the criminals. Initially attracted to Willis, she nonetheless also ends up in bed with Thornton and a confused romantic relationship begins. Continuing along with their spree, the bandits hit the wall when the bank managers realize that they are non-violent and therefore no threat to them or their employees. This leads to one more big score at the Alamo Bank, where in the very opening scenes, things appear to go awry.

Gerade aus dem Gefängnis entflohen beschließen die beiden Banditen Joe Blake und Terry Collins sofort wieder ins Geschäft einzusteigen. Mit einer Reihe von originellen Banküberfällen wollen sie innerhalb kürzester Zeit das nötige Kleingeld beschaffen, um sich ein sorgloses Leben in Mexico finanzieren zu können. Doch dann platzt die hübsche Kate in die traute Harmonie der Gesetzlosen und sorgt für allerhand Wirbel.
