    L'incontro con la vicina tribù di indiani Sioux, in perenne lotta con la confinante tribù dei Pawnee, porterà un senso nuovo alla sua vita. La crescente stima e rispetto verso questo popolo nomade e, non ultimo, l'amore e il matrimonio con "Alzata Con Pugno", lo porterà ad integrarsi con la tribù stessa, condividendone i problemi ed i sentimenti e a rinnegare definitivamente il suo passato di soldato e di uomo bianco. Ricercato ed inseguito come traditore dai suoi ex commilitoni, sarà costretto alla fine ad abbandonare assieme alla moglie quello che è diventato il suo popolo, per evitare rappresaglie cruente degli Yankees nei confronti dei Sioux.

    t is the story of a cavalry officer of the United States of America which, after a suicidal act of heroism, is sent to the distant frontier outpost on the edge of grasslands inhabited by the Lakota. The historical moment is that of the Civil War of 1861, that the American Civil War that was fought between Northerners and Southerners.
    Lieutenant Dunbar spends the first month alone with the horse, Cisco, the wolf Two Socks and his diary.

    The meeting with the neighboring tribe of Sioux Indians, in perpetual struggle with the neighboring tribe of the Pawnee, will bring a new meaning to his life. The growing appreciation and respect for this nomadic people and, last but not least, love and marriage with "Cake With Fist", it will integrate with the tribe itself, sharing their problems and feelings and to deny his past as a soldier permanently and white man. Researched and pursued as a traitor by his former comrades will be forced eventually to leave with his wife what has become his people, to avoid bloody reprisals of the Yankees against the Sioux.
