Neighborhood boy Todd Bowden (Renfro) discovers that an old man living on his block named Arthur Denker (Mackellan) is nazi war criminal. Bowden confronts Denker and offers him a deal: Bowden will not go to the authorities if Denker tells him stories of the concentration camps in WWII. Denker agrees and Bowden starts visiting him regularly. The more stories Bowden hears, the more it affects his personality.

Dopo altre verifiche, ha la certezza che si tratta di Kurt Dussander, un criminale nazista immigrato illegalmente negli Stati Uniti e che da anni vive indisturbato sotto il falso nome di Arthur Denker. "Com'è noto c'è un 'altro' Stephen King, un autore che corteggia più intimi orrori, quello dalle cui opere sono stati tratti film interessanti come 'Stand By Me' e 'L'ultima eclissi'. Appartiene a questa categoria anche il racconto che sta all'origine di 'L'allievo'. Niente mostri zannuti ma l'oscura fascinazione del male, qui incarnato nello spettro del nazismo. E alto è anche il progetto di Singer: rifiutare l'effetto a favore dell'ellissi, raffreddare racconto ed emozioni indicando che il male si nasconde nella banalità quotidiana.
