As the film opens, Joanna (Eleanor Parker), a New Orleans woman arrives at the South American cocoa plantation to meet her new husband, plantation owner Christopher Leiningen (Charlton Heston) whom she has married by proxy.
Leiningen is cold and remote to her, rebuffing all her attempts to make friends with him. She's beautiful, independent, and arrives ready to be his stalwart helpmate; however, no one has told him she's a widow. He rejects her. During the next week, as she awaits the boat to take her back to the United States, they learn that legions of army ants - the Marabunta - will strike in a few days' time. Leiningen refuses to give up the home he fought so hard to create. Instead of evacuating, he resolves to make a stand against this indomitable natural predator. Joanna joins the fight to save the plantation; their courage and his probable loss of all he's worked for may crack his resolve to send her away.

The screenplay, was co-written by Ranald MacDougall and the blacklisted writer Ben Maddow. The film was produced in Technicolor by George Pal, who also made The War of the Worlds, Tom Thumb, and The Time Machine. The film's title is presumably a reference to how the ants "strip" the jungle and turn it into a wasteland.

William Conrad, who had starred as Leiningen in a 1948 adaptation of Stephenson's story for the radio program Escape, appears in the film as a district commissioner. The unique "sound" of the ants devouring everything in their path was created by swirling a straw in a glass of water with crushed ice, which was then amplified.
The Naked Jungle is a 1954 film directed by Byron Haskin, and starring Charlton Heston and Eleanor Parker. Telling the story of an attack of army ants on a Peruvian cocoa plantation, it was based on the short story "Leiningen Versus the Ants" by Carl Stephenson.

L'histoire du film se déroule en 1901. Joanna (Eleanor Parker), une femme de la Nouvelle-Orléans, arrive sur une plantation de cacao, située sur les bords du rio Negro au Brésil. Elle doit y rencontrer son nouveau mari, Christopher Leiningen (Charlton Heston), propriétaire de la plantation qu'elle a épousé par procuration.
Leiningen la reçoit plutôt froidement et repousse toutes ses tentatives pour devenir plus intime. Il la trouve belle, indépendante, bonne musicienne, mais est certain qu'elle a un défaut caché et tente de le découvrir. Lorsqu'elle lui avoue qu'elle est veuve, il décide aussitôt de la rejeter. La semaine suivante, alors qu'elle attend la venue du bateau qui doit la ramener aux États-Unis, Leiningen apprend que des millions de fourmis - la Marabunta - se dirige vers sa plantation. Son ami, le commissaire Clayton (William Conrad), lui affirme qu'on ne peut lutter contre une Marabunta et que la seule chose à faire est de lui laisser le passage mais lui est bien décidé à sauver sa plantation. De son côté, Joanna décide de rester près de lui et de l'épauler. Leiningen n'a pas le choix d'accepter sa présence. Si elle part, les Indiens qu'il emploie ne tarderont pas à partir également. Au cours des jours suivants, Leiningen découvre en Joanna une femme très courageuse et tombe petit à petit amoureux d'elle. Lorsque la Marabunta envahit la plantation et assiège l'hacienda, le couple s'aperçoit que la plantation ne peut être sauvée. Leiningen fait sauter le barrage afin de noyer les fourmis.

Cuando ruge la marabunta (originalmente The naked jungle, en inglés "La jungla desnuda") es una película clásica de aventuras ambientada en una hacienda sudamericana en 1901. Está basada en el relato corto "Leiningen Versus the Ants" ("Leiningen contra las hormigas") de Carl Stephenson.
Christopher Leiningen (Charlton Heston) es el rico propietario de una plantación de cacao en América del Sur. Se ha casado por poderes con una mujer norteamericana (Eleanor Parker). Ella llega a la hacienda y Leiningen deberá realizar un gran esfuerzo para acostumbrarse a convivir con una esposa. Entretanto surge el aviso de que se acerca la marabunta, una enorme colonia de hormigas que arrasan todo a su paso. La plantación está en peligro de perder toda su cosecha.

Durch Vermittlung seines Bruders hat Christopher Leiningen eine Frau geheiratet, ohne sie jemals gesehen zu haben. Auch ihre Bereitschaft anzupacken, lässt Leiningen kalt, er weist sie zurück. Joanna findet sich damit ab und beschließt, das nächste Schiff zu nehmen, das sie in die USA bringt.
Leiningen will sie am nächsten Hafen absetzen, doch sie finden eine bis aufs Skelett abgenagte Leiche. Der Tote ist von angriffslustigen Wanderameisen getötet worden. Das Ameisenheer, das 15 Kilometer lang und zwei Kilometer breit sein soll, wird Marabunta genannt, und strebt auf die Plantage zu. Leiningen weigert sich, seinen Besitz aufzugeben, für den er so hart gearbeitet hat. Er beschließt, den Angriff der Ameisen abzuwehren. Joanna hilft ihm mutig und entschlossen. Als das Ameisenheer endlich abgewehrt ist, ändert Leiningen seine Meinung über seine Frau, die nun bei ihm bleibt.From Wikipedia
