Adam Schwartz è un 25enne che conduce una vita tranquilla e felice; ha una bella fidanzata, Rachel, e lavora in un museo con il suoi migliore amico Kyle. Come un fulmine a ciel sereno, ad Adam viene diagnosticato un raro tipo di tumore: considerata la sua età e il suo stile di vita, il ragazzo fatica ad accettare la verità ma alla fine cede ai fatti e si rassegna a sottoporsi a chemioterapia. Pur supportato dalla famiglia e dagli amici, Adam trova compagnia in Katie, una giovane studentessa che lo aiuta a superare il trauma psicologico. Lentamente, Adam inizia a fare i conti con la realtà, a ripensare la sua vita in modo completamente nuovo, ad apprezzare le cose che dava per scontate.
