Footloose (1984)

"Io vado contro tutta la città e non solo contro tuo padre!". E' la frase-madre del film, gridata dal giovane Ren verso la giovanissima Ariel. Lui è appena giunto nella cittadina di Bomont. Per ragioni familiari ha lasciato Chicago, dove si scatenava con gli amici abbandonandosi alle acrobazie del rock. A Bomont invece quella "sana" terapia giovanile, il rock, è messa al bando da una legge comunale, difesa ad oltranza dal pastore della Chiesa locale, che ha perduto suo figlio in un incidente stradale, dopo una serata trascorsa a ballare. Ariel, la figlia del pastore, si innamora a prima vista di Ren, questi, a sua volta, ce la mette tutta per far tornare nella legalità il ballo e la musica rock nel paese, dominato paternalisticamente dal repressivo padre di lei. Dopo curiose avventurette con inevitabili screzi, scontri tra bande giovanili avverse, reciproche incomprensioni e prevedibili riconciliazioni, Ren e Ariel riescono a convincere il reverendo, e con lui il consiglio comunale, che "il diavolo non sta nel rock, ma altrove": tanto è vero che avranno l'autorizzazione di organizzare il ballo pubblico di fine anno scolastico per i giovani della cittadina.

Classic tale of teen rebellion and repression features a delightful combination of dance choreography and realistic and touching performances. When teenager Ren and his family move from big-city Chicago to a small town in the West, he's in for a real case of culture shock. Though he tries hard to fit in, the streetwise Ren can't quite believe he's living in a place where rock music and dancing are illegal. There is one small pleasure, however: Ariel, a troubled but lovely blonde with a jealous boyfriend. and a Bible-thumping minister, who is responsible for keeping the town dance-free. Ren and his classmates want to do away with this ordinance, especially since the senior prom is around the corner, but only Ren has the courage to initiate a battle to abolish the outmoded ban and revitalize the spirit of the repressed townspeople. Fast-paced drama is filled with such now-famous hit songs as the title track and "Let's Hear It for the Boy."
