In una scuola elementare di Montreal un'insegnante muore tragicamente. Avendo letto la notizia sul giornale, Bachir Lazhar, un immigrato algerino di 55 anni, si presenta nella scuola per offrirsi come supplente. Immediatamente assunto per sostituire la maestra scomparsa, si ritrova in una scuola in crisi mentre è costretto ad affrontare un dramma personale. Poco a poco Bachir impara a conoscere il suo gruppo di bambini scossi ma attenti. Mentre la classe inizia il processo di guarigione, nessuno nella scuola è a conoscenza del passato doloroso di Bachir; nessuno sospetta che è a rischio espulsione dal paese in qualsiasi momento…

Bachir Lazhar, an Algerian immigrant, is hired to replace an elementary school teacher who died tragically. While the class goes through a long healing process, nobody in the school is aware of Bachir's painful former life; nor that he is at risk of being deported at any moment. Adapted from Evelyne de la Cheneliere's play, Bachir Lazhar depicts the encounter between two distant worlds and the power of self-expression. Using great sensitivity and humor, Philippe Falardeau follows a humble man who is ready to transcend his own loss in order to accompany children beyond the silence and taboo of death.
