Dopo l'armistizio italiano i tedeschi occupano Roma, nell'ottobre del 1943 il comandante della polizia tedesca chiama il presidente della comunità israelitica al suo cospetto e gli ordina di consegnare 50 chili d'oro entro due giorni, altrimenti prenderà 200 capifamiglia "in ostaggio".

La comunità è divisa tra chi decide di accondiscendere al ricatto e consegnare il poco oro rimastogli e chi non crede nella parola dei tedeschi. Gli ebrei rimasti nel ghetto sono impoveriti dalle Leggi razziali italiane e con enorme difficoltà cercano di arrivare alla cifra imposta. Il presidente della comunità fa tutto il possibile per chiedere aiuti, angosciato e incerto che la consegna possa davvero servire a salvare delle vite.

Un gruppo di ragazzi si arma per ribellarsi, a capo del quale c'è il giovane calzolaio Davide. La decisione di non consegnare l'oro e contrastare il potere nazista lo porterà a scontrarsi con gran parte dei membri della comunità e con il precetto del rifiuto della violenza. Il film si addentra così nella questione della resistenza ebraica, sia armata (Davide si unirà ad un gruppo di partigiani, rinnegando gli insegnamenti religiosi) sia passiva (Simone, angosciato dal poco oro raccolto, si suicididerà di fronte al posto di blocco tedesco, con addosso le proprie vesti rituali).

Giulia, ex-compagna della scuola israelitica di Davide, in un primo momento sembra poter fuggire alla discriminazione e segregazione razziale, grazie all'amore corrisposto per Massimo, uno studente di medicina cattolico. Decisi a sposarsi, Giulia si battezzerà, divisa nell'amore verso le proprie radici. Infatti, quando malgrado l'avvenuta consegna dei 50 chili d'oro, i tedeschi rastrelleranno il ghetto portando via uomini, donne, malati e bambini, lei si darà volontariamente in mano ai tedeschi, per seguire suo padre e la sua gente.

One more trip back to Italy in the early '60s for this impressive film by Carlo Lizzani - another one I did not know as it may never have been released in the UK, but again, it is on YouTube complete at 93 minutes.
It used a fictional story to recount the facts behind the final deportation of the Jews of Rome: Nazi Colonel Herbert Kappler summoned the highest representatives of the Jewish community ordering them to collect 50 kgs of gold within 36 hours. The punishment in case of failure or disobedience was the detention of 200 people. Gold was collected and brought but on nothing could save 1259 Jews from deportation: it was the beginning of the end for the Jewish community of the Ghetto of Rome.

The film stars French actor Gerard Blain as the militant Jew determind to fight back and who joins the partisans, and Jean Sorel (again, see below) as the Catholic who falls for Jewish Anna Maria Ferrero who witnesses the start of the round-up. The Roman locations are nicely used and we see a lot of the Jewish community as they try to reason with the Germans and understand what is happening to them as they are rounded up. One of many films then on the German occupation of Rome, like THE RED AND THE BLACK 1983 (Christopher Plummer plays Kappler here, to Gregory Peck's priest in the Vatican, with John Gielgud excellent as Pius XIIP) and MASSACRE IN ROME with Mastroianni and Burton.

Recovery Volumes (.rev)
Recovery volumes or .rev files are special files which can be created by WinRAR/RAR and allow you to reconstruct missing and damaged files in a volume set. They can
only be used with multi-volume archives.
This feature may be useful for backups or, for example, when you post a multivolume archive to a newsgroup and some of the subscribers did not receive some files. Reposting recovery volumes instead of usual volumes may reduce the total number of files to repost.
Each recovery volume is able to reconstruct one missing RAR volume. For example, if you have 30 volumes and 3 recovery volumes, you are able to reconstruct any 3 missing volumes. If the number of .rev files is less than a number of missing volumes, reconstructing is impossible. The total number of usual and recovery volumes must not exceed 255 and the number of recovery volumes must be less than the number of RAR volumes.
WinRAR reconstructs missing and damaged volumes either when clicking on .rev file, or when using rc command or automatically, if it cannot locate the next volume and finds the required number of .rev files when unpacking.
You may use the "Recovery volumes" option in the Archive name and parameters dialog or a similar option also appears in the Protect archive command to create recovery volumes. In the command line mode you may do it with -rv switch or rv command.
Original copies of damaged volumes are renamed to *.bad before reconstruction. For example, volname.part03.rar will be renamed to volname.part03.rar.bad.
