La zia Agata ha una pupilla, Adelina, che intende far sposare con suo nipote Totò, per questo in una lettera acclude una fotografia della ragazza. Quando la apre, però, Totò si trova davanti a una sorpresa. La foto è quella di una negra dai capelli crespi. Totò freme e corre a chiedere consiglio ad un amico, che gli suggerisce di sposarsi immediatamente, prima dell'arrivo di questa fantomatica Adelina. Totò allora si mette alla ricerca di una moglie.

Il primo tentativo, però, non riesce: Totò allora si rivolge ad un'agenzia che per equivoco lo manda in casa d'una signora sposata. Per scampare alle ire del marito geloso, Totò salta dalla finestra, incorrendo in nuovi guai. All'arrivo di zia Agata, Totò ingaggia una modella perché finga di essere sua moglie, ma la faccenda si ingarbuglia sempre più e Totò non sa proprio come uscirne. Quando però arriva Adelina, non somiglia per niente alla ragazza della foto…
