L'hypothèse d'une bonne partie des scientifiques fut longtemps la suivante : l'espèce humaine aurait cessé d'évoluer au moment où elle a commencé à s'armer contre les caprices de la nature. En effet, quel besoin nos gènes auraient-ils de s'adapter, dès lors que nous disposons de vêtement pour nous protéger du froid, de techniques agricoles pour nous prémunir des famines, et de médicaments qui nous assurent de vivre assez vieux pour procréer ? Or, la cartographie du génome humain fournit aujourd'hui aux scientifiques les clés de l'histoire de notre évolution : non seulement l'espèce humaine a poursuivi son évolution au cours des 50 000 dernières années, mais il se pourrait même qu'elle ait évolué durant cette période à une vitesse encore jamais atteinte au cours de son histoire. Dans bien des cas, c'est justement la technologie - celle-là même que nous soupçonnions d'avoir arrêté l'évolution - qui en a été le moteur.
Alice Roberts, anatomiste et anthropologue, nous fait rencontrer des chercheurs travaillant sur de récentes modifications du génome humain. Elle dévoile avec quelle rapidité étonnante les changements ont pu avoir lieu chez l'homme, remettant ainsi en question l'idée d'une évolution se déployant nécessairement sur des centaines de milliers d'années.
