Voor het eerst in achttien jaar keert de gepensioneerde Italiaanse mijnwerker, Luigi Bertone, terug naar Sicilië om er het huwelijk van zijn petekind bij te wonen. Onderweg krijgt hij af te rekenen met motorpech en leert hij Anita, een jonge liftster, kennen. Het meisje herstelt zijn wagen, maar steelt hem ook. Wanneer Luigi zijn auto wat later terugvindt, heeft Anita net een overval gepleegd. Samen slaan ze op de vlucht…
Par une belle journée de printemps, Luigi, un mineur, se rend en Sicile pour assister aux noces de sa filleule. Pour épater la famille, il achète une voiture flamboyante… qui tombe en panne sur le premier parking. Anita, dix-sept ans, échappée d'un orphelinat, l'aide à réparer sa voiture mais en profite pour la voler. Lorsque Luigi la retrouve un peu plus loin dans une station service, il est impliqué dans un hold-up et conserve l'argent en gage contre ses clefs de voiture. Conservateur menant une vie paisible et monotone, Luigi se trouve ainsi en compagnie d'une rebelle l'entraînant dans de folles aventures. Cependant, il découvre au travers d'Anita la fille qu'il n'a jamais eue.
During the '50s and '60s, many Italians immigrated to Belgium to work its rich coal mines. After the mines closed, many Italians remained there. This lively road comedy centers on Luigi, a retired miner who heads down to Sicily to attend the wedding of his goddaughter. To get there, he buys a new car. Unfortunately, he knows almost nothing about how the four-wheeled contraption operates. Still he heads down south and it isn't long before a breakdown occurs. Fortunately, a beautiful little runaway shows up and fixes it for him…
