Fed up with her present lifestyle, and more particularly sexually unsatisfied by her boyfriend Fred, Sandrine decides to find a new way in life. Intrigued by her friend Sophie, who tells her about her sexual experimentations, she will find, through various encounters, new pleasures and new experiences, whether physical or spiritual.
French filmmaker Jean-Claude Brisseau once again explores the nexus of the body, the mind and the soul in this sensual drama. Sandrine (Carole Brana) has become vaguely dissatisfied with her life, but isn't fully aware of the depth of her ennui until she strikes up a conversation with stranger in the park who discusses his philosophy of the emotional dead end that traps so many in this day and age. Newly aware of the rut she's fallen in, Sandrine leaves behind her job and an unfulfilling relationship with her boyfriend before encountering Greg (Arnaud Binard), a psychiatrist who is an advocate of hypnotic therapy. Sandrine allows Greg to use his techniques to help her tap into the depth of her erotic desires, and when she meets Sophie (Lise Bellynck), Greg's former lover who is willing to share tales of her own sexual explorations, Sandrine embarks on an odyssey to embrace the outer limits of her carnal imagination. A L'aventure was the third film in a trilogy of erotic tales from Jean-Claude Brisseau, following Les Anges Exteminateurs (aka The Exterminating Angels) and Choses Secretes (aka Secret Things).
Avec À l’aventure, Jean-Claude Brisseau semble poser la dernière pierre d’une réflexion audacieuse en trois étapes sur le mystère de la sexualité féminine et sur la problématique de sa représentation à l’écran. D’abord dans Choses secrètes (2002), Sandrine et Nathalie, on s’en souvient, s’affranchissaient du conformisme bien-pensant et misaient sur leurs charmes pour gravir l’échelle sociale. Après une phase d’apprentissage où elles s’exerçaient à repousser leurs limites, les deux jeunes femmes mettaient en pratique leur savoir-faire au sein d’une grande entreprise. Mais le contrôle de leur ascension fulgurante leur échappait lorsqu’elles se trouvaient confrontées à la figure sadienne du directeur. Loin de céder à un érotisme facile, les séquences de « sexe explicite » tenaient lieu d’épreuves dont l’issue, qu’elle fût bonne ou mauvaise, avait des répercussions importantes sur le parcours initiatique des héroïnes
