    Thomas vient d'apprendre la mort de son frère Richard, qu'il ne voyait plus depuis plusieurs années. Il quitte Paris et va à Marseille reconnaître le corps. Il récupère les affaires de son frère puis revient dans sa ville natale. A peine arrivé il retourne dans la maison de son enfance mais ne s'y attarde pas. Il loue une chambre dans un hôtel à l'extérieur de la ville. Personne dans les parages excepté Jeanne, la propriétaire des lieux, Lucas, un adolescent qu'elle a recueilli, et Joseph, un vieux mécanicien. Tous ont bien connu Richard. Thomas décide de ne pas leur révéler son identité…

    (Thomas has just been informed that his brother, Richard, has died. It has been some years since he saw him. He leaves Paris and goes to Marseille to identify the body, gathers up his brother’s things, and then heads for his home town. Shortly after arriving, he returns to his childhood home, but doesn’t linger there. He rents a room in a hotel on the outskirts. There’s no one about, except for Jeanne, the hotel owner, Lucas, a teenager she’s taken in, and Joseph, an elderly mechanic. They all knew Richard well. Thomas decides not to reveal his true identity to them.)
