Laurence a un problème avec les hommes, elle tombe amoureuse au premier regard et bien souvent elle effraie ses prétendants par son empressement. Finalement, elle est soit trompée soit quittée. Après la mort de sa mère, elle fait tout pour retrouver Renée, sa grand-mère qu'elle n'a jamais connue. Mais Renée ne manifeste aucun empressement à la vue de sa petite-fille, bien au contraire : sa naïveté l'agace. Pour lui prouver qu'elle se trompe sur l'amour, et qu'elle va toujours se faire avoir, Renée va peu à peu la former à son art de vivre. Cet art se compose de règles élémentaires : séduire un homme riche, l'épouser, puis s'en libérer rapidement, discrètement mais définitivement pour empocher son assurance vie, profiter égoïstement puis renouveler. Laurence va se laisser "coatcher" par cette étrange grand-mère. Elle va se prêter à son instrumentalisation afin croit-elle de réussir à s'émanciper de l'amour. Mais le jeu n'est pas sans risque pour elle ni pour Renée ni pour les hommes qu'elles vont croiser.

(Laurence, aged 20, is ready for love, but she always manages to fall for the wrong guy. After the death of her mother, she engages a private detective to track down her missing grandmother, Renée, who shares none of Laurence’s romanticism. For Renée, men are merely the means to an end: the wealth she needs for her luxurious lifestyle. Her seemingly foolproof system is to seduce a wealthy man, marry him, dispose of him as quickly as decency and opportunity will allow and then collect on the life assurance. Having been let down by her latest amorous adventure (with a young insurance salesman, Thomas), Laurence decides to follow her grandmother’s example and marry for wealth. Whilst she ties the knot with a rich garage owner, Renée hitches up with an ageing playboy. It is not long before both women grow tired of their new husbands and wish they were rid of them. Fortunately, fate is there to offers both of them a helping hand…)
