    On 6 September 1950, an exhausted platoon of the 24th Infantry Division is cut off. In addition to losing radio contact, the platoon is harassed by unseen North Korean infiltrators who silently kill the Americans and take their weapons. Platoon commander Lieutenant Benson (Ryan) has only vague instructions to reach a certain hill to link up with American forces.

    Le 6 septembre 1950, durant la retraite sur Pusan en Corée, le lieutenant Benson, à la tête d'un peloton de seize hommes, tente de regagner les lignes des forces américaines situées à vingt-cinq kilomètres de là, à la cote 465. En chemin, Benson et ses hommes croisent une jeep conduite par le sergent Montana, qui essaie de ramener en lieu sûr un colonel paralysé à la suite d'un choc nerveux et incapable de bouger et de parler…
