The Countess of San Severina, is but one of the women who love him a la folie, spurring jealous retribution in high places from those who in turn want her. The Charterhouse of Parma (French: La Chartreuse de Parme, Italian: La Certosa di Parma) is a 1948 French-Italian drama film based on the novel of the same name by Stendhal.

The story begins around 1820 in the principality of Parma. First enlisted in the army of Napoleon and participant in the Battle of Waterloo, the Marquis Fabrizio del Dongo spends five years in a seminar in Naples. He then goes to Parma, guest of his aunt, the Duchess of San Severino, who, being in love with him, abandons her lover, Count Mosca, and refuses the courtship of Prince Ernesto IV, the mad tyrant who rules the principality: her secret passion for the young man whom she protects is clear.

Fabrizio, who in the meantime woos several women, is arrested for killing the protector of one of them. Imprisoned, he is then sentenced to twenty years in prison by the vengeful prince. Here he falls in love with the beautiful Clelia Conti, daughter of the governor of the prison. Aided by the loyal San Severino, Clelia manages to make Fabrizio escape, but her father forces her to marry a rich nobleman. Fabrizio, who's taken refuge in Piedmont, becomes aware of what had happened in Parma in his absence and returns, but Clelia's father, in order to save his career, sets him a trap and he's arrested again. The aunt, to save him, gives herself to prince Ernesto…
