Ingmar Bergman - Det sjunde inseglet (1957)

Starkly existential, boldly poetic, slow and grim, Ingmar Bergman’s great classic has haunted film aficionados, baffled and bored college students, inspired innumerable parodists and challenged both believers and unbelievers for nearly half a century. Long considered one of the greatest films of all time, Bergman’s medieval drama of the soul can be difficult to watch but is impossible to forget.

Suecia, siglo XIV. La peste negra asola Europa. El caballero sueco Antonius Blovk y su leal escudero regresan a su país, tras diez años de inútiles combates en las Cruzadas por Tierra Santa. Vuelve como un hombre atormentado y lleno de dudas, y la Muerte se presenta reclamándolo. Con la esperanza de obtener algunos conocimientos antes de morir, el caballero reta a la Muerte a una partida de ajedrez. El hombre busca respuestas a las preguntas claves de la vida, la muerte y la existencia de Dios durante una partida de ajedrez. Unánimemente aclamada como una de las grandes obra maestras de Bergman.




Bergman called this masterpiece, now revived with an excellent new print, "a little film I and my friends made one summer". Perhaps he had an inkling that it would end up highly respected (and endlessly parodied) as a medieval allegory about a man who has lost his faith but not his need for it. Taking its title from the Book of Revelations, it encapsulates, as much in images as with words, a world as desperate as our own. Nuclear holocaust was then Bergman's fear, now substituted by terrorism and climate change.




The central character is Max von Sydow's Knight, returning from a seemingly pointless decade of crusading to a Sweden ravaged by the Black Death. He is challenged to a game of chess by Bengt Ekerot's cloaked figure of Death as the prophesied Time of Judgement arrives. Only a simple peasant, his wife and child give him some sort of comfort.




Bergman's superbly shot wintry images, much like those of a silent film, print themselves indelibly on the mind, while the Knight's search for a God who never answers foreshadows the pessimism of the director's later work. Bergman clearly believed the world was worth saving, but could find no answer as to how. After seeing the film, one doubts if we can either.

Como no podía ser menos, la muerte y todos los interrogantes que lleva consigo es la gran pregunta que religiosos y ateos pretenden responder. ¿A dónde vamos cuando morimos? ¿Qué hay más allá de la muerte? Estas preguntas torturan la mente del caballero Antonius Blovk (Max Von Sydow), quien a la vuelta de las cruzadas se encuentra con una Suecia asolada por la peste, y La Muerte que lo espera. Con la intención de alargar el tiempo de vida y encontrar un sentido a lo que ha sido su existencia, el caballero reta a La Muerte a jugar una partida de ajedrez: si gana, ésta lo dejará irse; pero si pierde, lo llevará consigo.
Sin duda, una película aconsejable para los tiempos que corren, en que los visionarios y fanáticos vuelven a la carga con el Apocalipsis.
