C'est à Chicago qu'une grande roue panoramique de 80 mètres de haut remportait un vif succès lors de l'exposition universelle de 1893.
Deux ans plus tard, Londres inaugurait son propre appareil avec un mécanisme de rotation innovant. En 2000, la cité anglaise célébre l'entrée dans le XXIe siècle avec une nouvelle grande roue, de 135 mètres. Cette fois, l'innovation est du côté des nacelles qui sont transformées en capsules d'observation pivotant sur elles-mêmes.
La Chine a construit un manège illuminé la nuit, spécialement conçu pour supporter les éclairages.
Mais la plus grande roue en exercice en 2009 reste le "Flyer" de Singapour qui culmine à 165 mètres…
