The movie is a modern remake of Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen. It is shot entirely in Xhosa, and combines both music from the original opera with traditional African music. It takes place in the Cape Town township of Khayelitsha. It was translated into Xhosa by Andiswa Kedama and Pauline Malefane, who also play Amanda and Carmen in the movie. The movie tells the story of a cigarette factory-worker, Carmen, and her doomed love affair with police sergeant Jongikhaya.
L'Opéra de Carmen transposé dans un petit village sud-africain… Pour son adaptation, le réalisateur Mark Dornford-May a analysé scrupuleusement le récit. Le scénario de son long métrage de fiction se base sur la mise en scène qu'il avait auparavant créée pour l'opéra, transposant les amours de Carmen et de Don José dans un township d'Afrique du Sud, ce qui implique le contexte usant de la vie quotidienne. Les textes de l'opéra ont été traduits en xhosa pour l'enregistrement musical.
