Manuela is a spirited and independent teenager sent to a boarding school when her mother dies. The Prussian principal runs the school with an iron hand, believing that discipline and hunger strengthen a girl's character. Like the rest of the girls, Manuela develops a crush on Elizabeth Von Bernburg, a young teacher who believes it's important to be the children's trusted friend. Manuela's mistake is to announce her love in front of guests and students at a party following a school play. How will the principal discipline Manuela, and how will Fraulein Von Bernberg, Manuela, and the other girls react to the principal's decisions?

Siamo in Germania, negli anni '30. A Potsdam, in un collegio femminile, vige un'educazione rigida e severa. Manuela, una allieva molto introversa, e conquistata da una insegnante molto comprensiva, che usa metodi molto diversi da quelli imposti dall'Istituto, e piano piano si lascia trascinare verso un affetto morboso per la donna. La giovane inizia a sognare carezze e gesti di affetto dell'insegnante. Dopo qualche tempo c'e la recita scolastica annuale e, nell'euforia, Manuela si ubriaca e confessa pubblicamente il suo amore per la docente. Scoppia lo scandalo e la direttrice ristabilisce l'ordine con severi provvedimenti disciplinari. Presa dallo sconforto e piena di sensi di colpa, la studentessa decide di suicidarsi, ma viene salvata dalle compagne di scuola.
