Stanley Kramer - Judgment at Nuremberg (1961)

It has been three years since the most important Nazi leaders have already been tried. This trial is about 4 Judges who used their offices to conduct Nazi sterilization and cleansing policies. Retired American Judge Dan Haywood has a daunting task ahead of him. The Cold War is heating up and no one wants any more trials as Germany, and allied Governments want to forget the past. But what is the right thing to do is the question the tribunal must decide.

Sobre Dan Haywood, un juez norteamericano retirado, recae la importante responsabilidad de presidir este emblemático juicio sobre el exterminio y holocausto nazi. After the end of World War II, the world gradually became aware of the full extent of the war crimes perpetrated by the Third Reich. In 1948, a series of trials were held in Nuremberg, Germany, by an international tribunal, headed by American legal and military officials, with the intent of bringing to justice those guilty of crimes against humanity. However, by that time most of the major figures of the Nazi regime were either dead or long missing, and in the resulting legal proceedings American judges often found themselves confronting the question of how much responsibility someone held who had "just followed orders." Judgment at Nuremberg is a dramatized version of the proceedings at one of these trials, in which Judge Dan Haywood (Spencer Tracy) is overseeing the trials of four German judges -most notably Dr. Ernst Janning (Burt Lancaster) and Emil Hahn (Werner Klemperer)- accused of knowingly sentencing innocent men to death in collusion with the Nazis. Representing the defense is attorney Hans Rolfe (Maximilian Schell), while prosecuting the accused is U.S. Col. Tad Lawson (Richard Widmark). As the trial goes on, both the visiting Americans and their reluctant German hosts often find themselves facing the legacy of the war, and how both of their nations have been irrevocably changed by it. Judgment at Nuremberg also features notable supporting performances by Marlene Dietrich, Judy Garland, and Montgomery Clift.




The movie is most powerful for its subtle and shaded characterizations of both victim and victimizer. There are no easily identifiable evil enemies: the bad guys seem an awful lot like you or me, which is one of the film's central points about the rise of the Nazis. Riveting performances distinguish the movie, especially Montgomery Clift, Judy Garland, and Burt Lancaster in the showiest parts (which they make the most of). Spencer Tracy anchors the proceedings with a reliably level-headed performance. The script, which presents complex moral and philosophical issues quite well, is not quite as cutting, bitter, or angst-ridden as the subject demands. The subject matter guarantees some intensely emotional moments; however, the script occasionally fails to use them to challenge viewers to look more closely at their own self-satisfaction. Instead, we get some rather windy speechifying. Visually, the film is somewhat static (as courtroom dramas often are), though the dramatic power of the historical subject often makes it easy to overlook this flaw. Originally written and produced as a play for television, the screen version of Judgment at Nuremberg was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, with Maximilian Schell and Abby Mann taking home Oscars for (respectively) Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Vencedores o vencidos no es solamente una película donde podemos apreciar grandes actuaciones, ya que dentro de ella se plantea un interesantísimo dilema moral e ideológico de diversas connotaciones y no sólo se juzgan a las personas sino también a todo un país, Alemania. Dentro de esta excelente realización hay espléndidos monólogos de una intensidad y credibilidad muy lograda, consiguiendo tener siempre al espectador atento a cualquier aparición e intervención que se realiza en el juicio. Kramer dirige de manera soberbia todos los aspectos, ya que consigue que las casi tres horas de película no resulten en ningún momento pesadas y además nos ofrece unas pausas indirectas que invitan al espectador a reflexionar sobre lo acontecido en ese momento, es decir, no nos aturde con solo la filmación del juicio sino que nos hace plantear preguntas en nuestra mente sobre la veracidad de lo que cuentan lejos de ese espacio reducido. Además Kramer efectúa un manejo soberbio de la cámara adecuándola en el momento correcto, en la expresión más enardecida, en como los ojos lo muestran todo y recibimos de manera profunda la intensidad que rodea a una película que trata un tema tan delicado. Después de ver la película, cada uno puede sacar las conclusiones que pueda pensar que sean ciertas; un logro de la película, ya que consigue plantearte distintos puntos de vista sobre lo que aconteció en esos lamentables años. Tampoco defiende una postura concreta, ofrece al espectador esa libertad, dándonos también momentos paradójicos, como una similitud entre las situaciones vividas entre el juez principal y el principal acusado. También vemos las implicaciones políticas que rodearon a esos juicios y los extremismos de los argumentos de todos los partícipes en este juicio, todos con un convencimiento que algunos creen justo, otros patriótico, otros que dicen que era su obligación.



Encabezada por un reparto espectacular, representa una lección de interpretación inolvidable, siendo difícil destacar a alguno, aunque atrae la interpretación del abogado defensor Maximilian Schell, en un contrapunto perfecto con Richard Widmark, el tenaz fiscal. No se puede soslayar la angustiosa interpretación de Judy Garland bajo la presión del dedo acusador de Maximilian Schell, la espectacular intervención de Montgomery Clift, como un hombre de pocas facultades mentales y Marlene Dietrich, actuando en un papel típico de mujer fría alemana, quien en un detalle curioso rememora la mítica canción "Lili Marlen". Pero las dos figuras principales de la película son Spencer Tracy y Burt Lancaster, este último siempre con expresión hierática, afligida pero a la vez rabiosa, mostrando a un hombre a punto de estallar y de cuya boca no puede salir otra cosa que su verdad. Spencer Tracy realiza una soberbia interpretación de un juez que tiene en su mano decidir el destino de los hombres que va a juzgar. Lejos de esas cuestiones históricas, si queréis disfrutar de un grandísimo drama judicial, lleno de interpretaciones estelares, no podéis dejar de ver Vencedores o Vencidos.
Propuesta para once Oscars, obtuvo dos: Maximilian Schell, mejor actor de reparto, y Abby Mann, mejor guión adaptado.
