Klaus Nomi (January 24, 1944 - August 6, 1983) was a German countertenor noted for remarkable vocal performances and an unusual, elfin stage persona. Nomi is remembered for bizarrely theatrical live performances, heavy make-up, unusual costumes, and a highly stylized signature hairdo which flaunted a receding hairline. His songs were equally unusual, ranging from synthesizer-laden interpretations of classic opera to covers of 1960s pop standards like Chubby Checker's "The Twist" and Lou Christie's "Lightning Strikes".

Max Reger's music is complex, difficult, studious, technically great but emotionally lacking, and the fact that on most photographs of him he looks quite grumpy fits the image. Yet the cliché is distroyed by his clarinet quintet, beautifully played here by Sabine Meyer. Being the last piece the composer wrote (something of an alcoholic, he died aged 43), it has an intensely moving lyricism while displaying a quiet resignation. This autumnal feel immediately remind the listener of those other masterpieces in the genre: Mozart's and Brahms' clarinet quintets, with which it has also formal parallels.
By contrast, the string sextet is almost symphonic, full of energy and colour, but with a long slow movement which Reger has described as "a prayer".

    Imponderables: Science

    David Feldman, «Imponderables: Science»
    Collins | ISBN: 0060898860 | 2006-10-01 | 192 pages | PDF | 2 Mb

In gathering the most fascinating questions asked about science into a handy Gem format, pop culture guru David Feldman demystifies these and much more in Imponderables: Science. Providing you with information you can't find in encyclopedias, dictionaries, or almanacs, Science is a fun look at the little things that make life so interesting. Feldman, a media consultant and lover of the obscure, here addresses scores of questions that one may have contemplated, but to which no answers are readily forthcomingwhy certain traffic jams occur and clear up without apparent reason, why the word "Filipino" is spelled with an F and not a Ph, why unleaded gasoline costs more than leaded. In an engaging, sometimes jocular manner, Feldman communicates an impressive amount of information: a piece on popcorn develops into an examination of the economics of running a movie theater; the answer to a question on laundry bleach is worthy of an encyclopedia. Occasionally, Feldman offers such a fresh way of looking at a phenomenonas when he discusses why people cry at happy endingsthat he makes us see it as if for the first time. This is an entertaining collection of trivial and not so trivial information.
