Few bands in the history of rock & roll were riddled with as many contradictions as the Who. All four members had wildly different personalities, as their notoriously intense live performances demonstrated. The group was a whirlwind of activity, as the wild Keith Moon fell over his drum kit and Pete Townshend leaped into the air with his guitar, spinning his right hand in exaggerated windmills. Vocalist Roger Daltrey strutted across the stage with a thuggish menace, as bassist John Entwistle stood silent, functioning as the eye of the hurricane. These divergent personalities frequently clashed, but these frictions also resulted in a decade's worth of remarkable music – it took some five years to find their audience, but at the tail end of the 1960s they suddenly achieved a level of popularity rivaling the Rolling Stones, both as a live act and in album sales.

Although she will probably always be first remembered for her work as a member of the Mamas & the Papas, Cass Elliot had a surprisingly productive – if abbreviated – solo career after the group called it quits in 1968. She released five albums (and another in which she shared billing with Dave Mason) between 1968 and her death in 1974, and while it’s natural to wonder where this wonderful singer would have taken her talents had she lived longer, she left a larger recorded legacy than most people realize. This two-disc set (covering 1968 to 1971) includes material from her first two solo albums (plus related period songs like the single “Make Your Own Kind of Music”), leaving it as a nice summation of the first half of the post-Mamas & the Papas Cass Elliot story.

The supporting crew on Cale's final Island album makes for a lineup that could never have happened again – at least, in terms of future results, imagining, among others, Cale, Chris Spedding, Brian Eno, and Phil Collins once more in the same room together seems totally unlikely. Regardless of the oddity, Cale once again led a great ensemble band (Spedding now having fully taken over from Manzanera on guitar) through another set of great, inspiring songs. Whoever is putting in the guitar solos, Spedding or Cale, sometimes misfires, sometimes succeeds brilliantly – consider opening song "My Maria," where the earlier efforts are intrusive but the concluding parts a perfect addition to the building smack of the song. Cale's songs generally tend towards the uneasy throughout, his sometimes strained but never forced singing, high volume at points, making the most of the material…

Since it was beamed by satellite to Asian & other countries, there was a delay to America, which missed much of what Aloha had to offer. It was a global smash and was considered one of the most outstanding concert performances of his career. It has a beautiful booklet, with never-before-seen photos & rare memorabilia, a rehearsal concert, post concert songs session, more.

In the world of classical-music recordings, the works of J.S. Bach naturally have overshadowed those of the "other" Bachs - the great composer's sons and ancestors. Yet as this CD demonstrates, there is considerable, beauty, originality and power in those too-neglected works. Charles Medlam, the well established interpreter of Baroque music, and his London Baroque ensemble are joined here by harpsichordist Richard Egarr in a demonstration that J.S.'s son Wilhelm Friedemann was in his own right an exceptional composer with a firm understanding of both his father's Baroque-synthesizing insights into musical structure and the new demands of the emerging Classical period in composition. This generally well-produced recording of three clavier concertos by J.S.'s oldest son sparkles with a blend of the old and the new - hints, and sometimes strong ones, of his father's musical approaches combined with treatments evocative of Haydn and the younger Mozart (whom it is said was taught briefly by one or more of the Bach boys). The performance stands as worthy of listening in its own right. And for those as yet unfamiliar with the output of Bach's more talented offspring, W.F. and Carl Philipp Emanual, it is an excellent introduction to a too-often bypassed corner of musical satisfaction.

Ostensibly a Dave Mason solo album, this became one of his finest when he was coupled with Cass Elliot, a stroke of genius. Elliot's involvement is, while not suspect, somewhat limited. Although she provides excellent background vocals, she tends to get a little lost in the harmony stack. Nevertheless, this is a great moment for her too. The album, though, is propelled by Mason's awesome songwriting talents, and tracks such as "On and On," "Walk to the Point," and several others bear this out. His guitar playing is some of his finest recorded work, especially the epic "Glittering Facade," where he layers acoustic and electric guitars with a scintillating effect. Elliot's "Here We Go Again" showcases her ability as a great lead vocalist, and Paul Harris provides some excellent keyboard and string arrangements, providing a glimpse of the fine work that was to follow in Stephen Stills' Manassas. Overall, this was a highly underrated album, but in the end, it is also one of the finest from the '70s.

Bob Marley was a hero figure, in the classic mythological sense. His departure from this planet came at a point when his vision of One World, One Love – inspired by his belief in Rastafari – was beginning to be heard and felt. The last Bob Marley and the Wailers tour in 1980 attracted the largest audiences at that time for any musical act in Europe.

This was one of my favorite albums in it's time. I never understood why it was never more popular than it was. I found out that this debut album came out at the same time many established bands released albums, and it fell throught the cracks. I looked for this in cd for about 4 years, and was more than happy to get it again. One of the great 3 man bands in my opinion, it rocks. Paul

The Spencer Davis Group is fondly remembered for their late-1960s singles that featured the deep soul vocals of Steve Winwood, then only a teenager. Singles like "Somebody Help Me," "Keep on Running," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man" were solid R&B rockers, making The Spencer Davis Group one of the most explosive bands in the so-called British Invasion era. When Winwood left to form Traffic, the group (having lost one of the most distinctive voices in rock history) simply wilted away. This collection has all their hits, but also includes several early Traffic tracks like "Paper Sun," and Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright," making it really more of a Steve Winwood compilation. The final track is a bizarre, bombastic, near-mento song called "Incense," released by a group named the Anglos in 1969, supposedly featuring Winwood. He has denied having any involvement with the song, however, and one wonders why it is presented here. There are separate and more definitive collections available for both the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, and the Anglos cut is, at best, a curio.

Elvis Presley performs in Honolulu, Hawaii, in this 1973 concert. Among the 25 titles included are "Blue Suede Shoes," "Suspicious Minds," and "C.C. Rider." Elvis made television and entertainment history as this was the first-ever live concert broadcast over satellite, reaching in excess of one billion people worldwide. Note: Elvis' performances of I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, I Can't Stop Loving You, and Johnny B. Goode in the Aloha From Hawaii concert have been deleted from the newly re-released DVD/VHS editions of this program. Music publishing clearance from the songs' owners was up for renewal and an agreement could not be reached. This edited version is the only available version of Elvis' historic Aloha From Hawaii concert.
