Unholy Trinity: The IMF, World Bank and WTO
    Zed Books | ISBN184277073X | 2003-11-29 | PDF | 256 pages | 18.38 MB

Our lives are all affected by three hugely powerful and well financed, but undemocratic, organizations: the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. These institutions share a common ideology. They aggressively promote "corporate" capitalism, neoliberalism, giving free rein to the interests of a small number of transnational corporations. This book presents the history and fundamental ideas of this economic ideology. Describing each member of the "unholy trinity," it shows how neoliberalism hijacked the IMF, World Bank and WTO in relation to their global financial, development and trade management roles.

    Books for Business | ISBN089499154X | 2002-04 | PDF | 136 pages | 3.68 MB

The focus of this book is on the U. S. segment of the global foreign exchange market. Chapters 1-3 describe the structure of the market and how it has changed. Chapters 4-6 comment on the main participant groups and the instruments that are traded. Chapters 7-8 look at foreign exchange trading from a micro, rather than macro, point of view - how an individual bank or other dealing firm sees things. Chapters 9-11 comment on some of the broader issues facing the international monetary system and how governments, central banks, and market participants operate within that system. This is followed by an epilogue.

The pricing of derivative instruments has always been a highly complex and time-consuming activity. Advances in technology, however, have enabled much quicker and more accurate pricing through mathematical rather than analytical models. In this book, the author bridges the divide between finance and mathematics by applying this proven mathematical technique to the financial markets. Utilising practical examples, the author systematically describes the processes involved in a manner accessible to those without a deep understanding of mathematics.

By incorporating real time into the analysis of sales and purchases, the phenomena of product innovation, advertising and distribution, the provision of consumer credit, and, ultimately, the production of a changing workforce all become intrinsic to microeconomic analysis. In mainstream economics the series of purchases, say, of a personal computer, then of software upgrades, peripherals, on-line services, and so on are analyzed as discrete transactions. McDermott instead links such purchases withing a "sale/purchase state" occupying the period beginning with the initial purchase of the PC and ending only when all of the PC's services have been exchanged to the buyer. In transforming the analysis of contemporary sales and purchases, Economics in Real Time draws a radically diferent picture of the terrain of a modern economy. John McDermott is Professor Emeritus of Labor Studies at the State University of New York, Old Westbury.

Financial Market Imperfections and Corporate Decisions: Lessons from the Transition Process in Hungary (Contributions to Economics)
    Physica-Verlag Heidelberg | ISBN 3790815810 | 2005-10-26 | PDF | 174 pages | 2.34 MB
The book presents the results of an empirical investigation of the behaviour of Hungarian firms during the transition process focusing in particular on the role of financial market imperfections for corporate capital structure and investment decisions. The results suggest that financial market reforms have succeeded, albeit partially, in hardening firms's budget constraints and improving the efficiency of the credit allocation process. In particular, following the introduction of the banking sector reform and of the new bankruptcy law, budget constraints became more binding for small private firms, while informational costs became less relevant for foreign-owned firms.

    National Academy Press | ISBN0309104149 | 2007-02-28 | PDF | 163 pages | 2.34 MB

Precise, accurate spatial information linked to social and behavioral data is revolutionizing social science by opening new questions for investigation and improving understanding of human behavior in its environmental context. At the same time, precise spatial data make it more likely that individuals can be identified, breaching the promise of confidentiality made when the data were collected. Because norms of science and government agencies favor open access to all scientific data, the tension between the benefits of open access and the risks associated with potential breach of confidentiality pose significant challenges to researchers, research sponsors, scientific institutions, and data archivists. Putting People on the Map finds that several technical approaches for making data available while limiting risk have potential, but none is adequate on its own or in combination. This book offers recommendations for education, training, research, and practice to researchers, professional societies, federal agencies, institutional review boards, and data stewards.

Financial Markets in Continuous Time (Springer Finance)
    Springer | ISBN354071149X | 2007-08 | PDF | 326 pages | 1.76 MB

In modern financial practice, asset prices are modelled by means of stochastic processes, and continuous-time stochastic calculus thus plays a central role in financial modelling. This approach has its roots in the foundational work of the Nobel laureates Black, Scholes and Merton. Asset prices are further assumed to be rationalizable, that is, determined by equality of demand and supply on some market. This approach has its roots in the foundational work on General Equilibrium of the Nobel laureates Arrow and Debreu and in the work of McKenzie. This book has four parts. The first brings together a number of results from discrete-time models. The second develops stochastic continuous-time models for the valuation of financial assets (the Black-Scholes formula and its extensions), for optimal portfolio and consumption choice, and for obtaining the yield curve and pricing interest rate products. The third part recalls some concepts and results of general equilibrium theory, and applies this in financial markets. The last part is more advanced and tackles market incompleteness and the valuation of exotic options in a complete market.

The Spatial Economy: Cities, Regions, and International Trade
    EThe MIT Press | ISBN0262062046 |1999-07-02 | PDF | 366 pages | 12.1 MB

Since 1990 there has been a renaissance of theoretical and empirical work on the spatial aspects of the economy–that is, where economic activity occurs and why. Using new tools–in particular, modeling techniques developed to analyze industrial organization, international trade, and economic growth–this "new economic geography" has emerged as one of the most exciting areas of contemporary economics.
The authors show how seemingly disparate models reflect a few basic themes, and in so doing they develop a common "grammar" for discussing a variety of issues. They show how a common approach that emphasizes the three-way interaction among increasing returns, transportation costs, and the movement of productive factors can be applied to a wide range of issues in urban, regional, and international economics. This book is the first to provide a sound and unified explanation of the existence of large economic agglomerations at various spatial scales.

Knut Wicksell on Poverty (Routledge Studies in the History of Economics)
    Routledge | ISBN0415344271 | 2005-03-01 | PDF | 144 pages | 1.74 MB

Knut Wicksell is arguably the greatest Swedish social scientist of all time and poverty was a theme that occupied him all his life. Indeed, it was probably this interest that was the main factor in drawing Wicksell away from his purely mathematical background and towards a greater understanding of the social sciences as a whole. Mats Lundahl, one of the world's leading development economists, examines Wicksell's thinking in the area and shows that his contribution is a major one.

    Springer | ISBN321137244X | 2007-05-04 | PDF | 207 pages | 1.5MB

The Southeast European Cooperative Initiative (SECI) was the first international instrument for "peace keeping and peace making". Conceived by the United States with full partnership and participation of the European Union, SECI was a response to the Dayton Agreement. SECI was convinced that sending troops and diplomats did not suffice. It called for a new strategy and approach that would promote economic and social development through regional cooperation. SECI understood that despite their differences, the countries of South East Europe shared many mutual concerns. For the international community, SECI was a prelude to a broader instrument - the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, launched in 1999. The approach was a success! This compendium of documents, agreements, analyses and essays gives a glimpse into decision-making processes and results achieved.
