Elegant little volume. This handsome little paperback features excellent photographs of some of the period costumes preserved in the Kyoto Costume Institute, in Japan. Details of embroidery, and accoutrements like hats and camisoles, etc., are remarkable. The exquisite garments range in date from the lavish era of Marie Antoinette through the late 20th century, and include pieces from major couture houses still active today. All in all, a nice selection of works from the Institute's collection. Readers wishing to see additional costumes should access the Institute's web site, which is available in both Japanese and English.

What do tattooed Egyptian mummies of 2000 BC have in common with modern sub-cultural styles? From mini-skirts to skin decoration, make-up to hair, dress is imbued with symbols that reflect different meanings in different contexts. Calefato picks apart the multiple functions of modern dress, considering the psychological, cultural, spiritual and symbolic significances at play. What we wear is a vehicle for the (often contentious) expression of politics, gender and identity and therefore clothing is at the root of a complex set of messages, many paradoxical. Clothing may, for example, liberate through the pleasures of masquerade and at the same time "cage" or control the body. The Clothed Body shows how semiotics can provide a convincing template for understanding dress in a wide range of contexts.

Drawing on interviews with clubbers from a variety of backgrounds, he dispels myths and offers new insights into the contemporary clubbing scene. Contrary to popular perception, clubbing is not just for youths: the clubbers in Inside Clubbing range from their mid-twenties to mid-fifties. Many have been on the scene for years and offer a historical perspective on changes over the last decade. Jackson explores the real practice of clubbing first-hand and offers the most balanced and sophisticated understanding of the club scene to date.

Imagine a world where oppressive, over-feminized media images of women have re-armed themselves with army boots, body modifications, and flamboyant hair. Is this just another fairy tale, and if so, why can't it be a reality? Holland unpacks the myth of model womanhood and considers how a group of real women define and practice "femininity." How does aging affect notions of femininity? What do women think about fashion, gender, and appearance as they grow older and less visible in our media dominated society? Do they choose to tone down or stay "out there," and what motivates their choice? Alternative Femininities gives voice to a previously silent group of women who struggle to resist sexist gender stereotypes, yet age with style, individuality and creativity. By looking at how real women negotiate self-perception in an increasingly image-conscious society, Holland provides a corrective to other accounts of gender and femininity lacking in real data.

The task of the anthropologist is to take ideas, concepts and beliefs from one culture and translate them into first another language, and then into the language of anthropology. This process is both fascinating and complex. Not only does it raise questions about the limitations of language, but it also challenges the ability of the anthropologist to communicate culture accurately. In recent years, postmodern theories have tended to call into question the legitimacy of translation altogether. This book acknowledges the problems involved, but shows definitively that 'translating cultures' can successfully be achieved.

    Cisco Press | Aug 2006 | ISBN: 158705258X | English | CHM | 648 pages | 8.8 MB

Deployments of voice over IP (VoIP) networks continue at a rapid pace. Voice gateways are an essential part of VoIP networks, handling the many tasks involved in translating between transmission formats and protocols and acting as the interface between an IP telephony network and the PSTN or PBX. Gatekeepers and IP-to-IP gateways help these networks scale. Gatekeepers provide call admission control, call routing, address resolution, and bandwidth management between H.323 endpoints including Cisco IOS® voice gateways and Cisco® Unified CallManager clusters. IP-to-IP gateways allow VoIP calls to traverse disparate IP networks.

-How to create and adopt a methodology that supports assertion-based design (predominately for RTL design),
-What to do with the assertions and methodology once you have them.
To support these three over-arching goals, we showcase multiple forms of assertion specifications: Accellera Open Verification Library (OVL), Accellera Property Specification Language (PSL), and Accellera System Verilog.

    Publisher: Jonathan Cape | 1961 | ISBN 0224 006487 | 81 pages | PDF | 389 kb

This is the second book of Cohen's poetry and it is filled with his unique brand of religion and sexuality, the sacred and the profane. One of the fascinating aspects of Leonard Cohen's poetry has been its elasticity and it's interesting to see how it has evolved over the years; you only have to look at the poems in THE SPICE BOX OF EARTH(1961) compared to the poems in THE ENERGY OF SLAVES(1972) to see the difference; the great thing is that they're all GOOD!
