Amazing Phrasing - Guitar: 50 Ways to Improve Your Improvisational Skills (Amazing Phrasing)
    Hal Leonard Corporation | ISBN 0262112035 | 2002-08-01 | PDF | 128 pages | 55.31 MB

This book/CD pack explores all the main components necessary for crafting well-balanced rhythmic and melodic phrases. It also explains how these phrases are put together to form cohesive solos. Many styles are covered - rock, blues, jazz, fusion, country, Latin, funk and more - and all of the concepts are backed up with musical examples. The 50 ideas are divided into five main sections: The Basics - covers fundamental but all too often forgotten techniques, such as slurs and vibrato, that can breathe new life into your phrases; Melodic Concepts - explores various aspects of melodic phrasing, such as motifs, chromaticism and sequences; Harmonic Embellishments - discusses the melodic potential of harmonic intervals (dyads), chords and chord partials; Rhythmic Concepts - explores various aspects of rhythmic phrasing, such as accents, free-time phrasing and metric modulation, and how it pertains to melodic soloing; Solo Structure - all of the topics discussed in the book come together to help form the big picture. The companion CD contains 89 demos for listening, and most tracks feature full-band backing. Also available for keyboard, tenor saxophone and trumpet.

    Watson-Guptill | ISBN 0823015874 | 1995-10-01 | PDF | 144 pages | 25.31 MB

As most Hogarth's books, this one is not at the least descriptive. The drawings are a bit more frequent, and you may find it useful. Some of the drawing I did not enjoy too much, but, all-in-all, they still demonstrate the proper material. The author provides 4 decent approaches to the illustration of wrinkles in different situations, mostly differenting dependent on the type of physical movement the character (human, in all cases) makes. Most of the book talks about drapery, but there is some information on how to apply the same principles onto skin.
This is a must-have for a character designer, whether you work in 2D or 3D. It will provide a beginning artist with the basic understanding of the dynamics of drapery and clothes, but it won't be much use for a medium-to-experienced studio artist, especially when she/he draws from life.

    Smart Fiction

I appreciate that Goodkind takes on politically sensitive social issues in the venue of his fantasy. I felt he conveyed well the dangers of pacifism, and the morally repugnant nature of strict non-violence when injustice is present and can only be quelled by violent means. By contrast, the nature of righteous/just retribution and aggression was well portrayed. I laud smart fiction, and this moves well beyond the standard fantasy fare.

"Pop internationalists" – people who speak impressively about international trade while ignoring basic economics and misusing economic figures are the target of this collection of Paul Krugman's most recent essays. In the clear, readable, entertaining style that brought acclaim for his best-selling Age of Diminished Expectations, Krugman explains what real economic analysis is. He discusses economic terms and measurements, like "value-added" and GDP, in simple language so that readers can understand how pop internationalists distort, and sometimes contradict, the most basic truths about world trade.

Attempts to persuade us - to believe something, to do something, to buy something - are everywhere. What is less clear is how one is to think critically about such attempts and whether any of them are sound arguments. Critical Thinking: A Concise Guide is a much-needed guide to thinking skills and a clear introduction to thinking clearly and rationally for oneself. Accessibly written, this book equips readers with the essential skills required to tell a good argument from a bad one.

    The MIT Press | ISBN 0262112035 | 1995-09-15 | PDF | 128 pages | 15.31 MB

Why do certain ideas gain currency in economics while others fall by the wayside? Paul Krugman argues that the unwillingness of mainstream economists to think about what they could not formalize led them to ignore ideas that turn out, in retrospect, to have been very good ones. Krugman examines the course of economic geography and development theory to shed light on the nature of economic inquiry. He traces how development theory lost its huge initial influence and virtually disappeared from economic discourse after it became clear that many of the theory's main insights could not be clearly modeled. Economic geography seems to have fared even worse, as economists shied away from grappling with questions about space – such as the size, location, or even existence of cities – because the "terrain was seen as unsuitable for the tools at hand."

A Must-Have Primer for Learning to Recognize Facial Expressions. Ekman is a leading authority on the study of the facial expressions and their relation to emotion, and this book is a methodical and thorough (for the layperson, at least) introduction to the field, with special focus on recognizing what he calls the six basic universally expressed emotions: happiness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust/contempt, and sadness. Ekman provides clear, well-detailed instructions for recognizing each of these emotions, and the book includes plenty of photos to illustrate the different facial contortions of each emotion. The only complaint I would have is that I had to do a lot of page flipping back and forth to read Ekman's remarks and subsequently refer to the relevant picture. Perhaps a future edition could be better formatted to make it easier for the reader to view the expression alongside Ekman's comments.

    The Economics of Microfinance
    The MIT Press | ISBN 0262012162 | 2005-06-01 | PDF | 360 pages | 6.31 MB

The microfinance revolution, begun with independent initiatives in Latin America and South Asia starting in the 1970s, has so far allowed 65 million poor people around the world to receive small loans without collateral, build up assets, and buy insurance. This comprehensive survey of microfinance seeks to bridge the gap in the existing literature on microfinance between academic economists and practitioners. Both authors have pursued the subject not only in academia but in the field; Beatriz Armendariz founded a microfinance bank in Chiapas, Mexico, and Jonathan Morduch has done fieldwork in Bangladesh, China, and Indonesia.

When first exposed to the Extensible Markup Language (XML), you might ask yourself how it fits in the overall picture of Web-related items. This is the same question developers, managers, and presidents ask, not only of their peers, but of themselves as well. Ironically, this is the same question people in those roles asked themselves years ago with other computer-based equipment such as personal computers, databases, and even MS Windows.
