Camille (Louise Grinberg) is the first girl in her school to become accidentally impregnated. But subsequent chatter amongst her clique of friends raises the topic of them all raising children together in a harmonious utopia that will free them from their parents and other responsibilities. This outlandish notion of bonding for life through collectively pre-ordained circumstances finds footing in the girls mind. 17 Girls (2011) provides a sombre commentary of the overwhelming naiveté of these girls whose desire to subsume one another’s futures is both strangely compelling and alienating. The collective desperation of the girls strikes its most poignant note in outsider Florence (Roxane Duran) whose need to assimilate with a social set outweighs the derision usually saved for her. A painful coda exemplifies the cruel recriminations of youth, a time of stark social definition that rarely leaves its subjects untouched.

The directors handle the thin material with a stylistic coolness that embraces the ambiguity of the girls' motivations and - in what may be perceived as both a positive and negative quality - leaves us eager for further illumination. Equally, their approach imbues weight to haunting moments of silent contemplation. Indeed, these rare glimpses of isolation seem like portentous prognostications of potentially divergent futures yet to unfold - futures in which each is refused access to aspirations that, instead of confirming autonomy, express something closer to an emotionally disconnected term of incarceration.
