    En 1955, Elia Kazan réalisait « A l'Est d'Eden », film culte avec James Dean à fleur de peau, en pleine révolte contre son père. Aujourd'hui Costa Gavras, en hommage, renverse la perspective dans « Eden à l'Ouest ». Elias, jeune immigré clandestin, beau comme une statue grecque, traverse la Méditerrannée pour imaginer une nouvelle vie. Le réalisateur de « Amen » raconte un long voyage initiatique plein de métaphores. Le bateau rempli d'exilés, la fuite, l'arrivée sur la plage… dans un camp de nudistes et la fin, sombre, sur les Champs Elysées. Le jeune Elias, obsédé par Paris, avance toujours plus loin dans la désillusion. Le réalisateur grec a choisi un héros, Riccardo Scarmacio, pur, candide et presque muet. Mais c'est une fable cruelle. Préjugés des riches contre les pauvres, surtout lorsqu'ils sont étrangers, peur devant l'horizon rempli de policiers.

    Elias (Riccardo Scarmacio), is not given a nationality, a move by the director to make a wider message with his film. We join Elias as he and his friend sit amongst hundreds of other illegal immigrants bound for France. Elias’ dream is to make it to Paris, which he has imagined as some sort of fairytale city in his mind, a place full of opportunity for a man such as himself. His plans are thrown into chaos when in the dead of night the men in charge of the boat dump the immigrants in the middle of the ocean, the water police fast approaching it is only the quick thinking Elias who jumps into the water and swims for land.

    Paris, 1830. Valentin (Jean Dujardin) se perd dans l'alcool, le jeu, les femmes. Il ne croit pas en la vie et surtout pas en l'amour. Son oncle Van Buck (Gérard Jugnot) ne croit qu'aux vertus de l'argent et du commerce. Tout les sépare jusqu'au jour où Van Buck, pour améliorer son image de marque va vouloir faire épouser à Valentin une jeune Baronne désargentée (Mélanie Doutey). Valentin, qui n'a absolument aucune envie de se marier, parie qu'il peut aisément la séduire en 24 heures et donc prouver qu'elle, comme toutes les autres, ne vaut pas la peine d'être aimée… Mais Cécile, qui croit au véritable amour, va s'avérer beaucoup plus coriace à éblouir que prévu et Valentin va devoir user de tous les stratagèmes possibles pour espérer gagner son pari. Le jeu du chat et de la souris commence… Mais qui est le chat ? Il ne faut jurer de rien…

    (Paris, 1830. Another revolution, another vacancy on the French throne. It’s a great time for free enterprise though. Georges van Buck, the owner of a tailoring business, imagines that he will soon own the most exclusive fashion house in France, if he can just think up a name for it. One of his clients, the Baroness de Mantes, is unable to settle her debts with him, so she agrees to allow her daughter Cécile to marry his nephew Valentin – an alliance which will earn Georges great prestige. There are just three drawbacks to the scheme. Firstly, Valentin and Cécile have never met. Secondly, Cécile has caught the revolutionary mood and has next to no sympathy for her pro-monarchy mother.
