Postriziny / Postřižiny / Cutting It Short - by Jirí Menzel (1981)

The film is an evocation of the childhood memories of Bohumil Hrabal in his provincial town of Nymburk, dominated by the local brewery. The main actors of the film, uncle Pepin and Maryška, are based on real family members of Hrabal: Maryška on his mother and uncle Pepin on his real uncle, who came to stay two weeks in the town but remained for fory years. His spontaneous stories influenced a lot Hrabal's literary work.

Set in 1938 Berlin, Louise Von Hollendorf is the wife of a young Nazi diplomat who meets and falls in love with a certain Mitsuko Matsugae, an artist and the daughter of the Japanese ambassador to Germany. Louise's husband Heinz soon finds out and tries to break up the union between his wife and Mitsuko only to eventually fall in love with Mitsuko also, while outside parties who include art professor Joseph Benno, Mitsuko's lover, and Heinz's cousin Wolf, a Gestapo officer, figure in which threatens to destroy the love triangle for good.

It's night on a Paris bridge. A girl leans over Seine River with tears in her eyes and a violent yearning to drown her sorrows. Out of nowhere someone takes an interest in her. He is Gabor, a knife thrower who needs a human target for his show. The girl, Adele, has never been lucky and nowhere else to go. So she follows him. They travel along the northern bank of the Mediterranean to perform and in the process win a big fortune through gambling.
