Ashes of Time (1994)

Ouyang Feng has lived in the western desert for several years. He left his home on White Camel Mountain when the woman he loves chose to wed his elder brother rather than him. Instead of pursuing glory himself, he he becomes an agent representing other swordsmen and bounty hunters. When locals come to him for protection or with a wish to eliminate a person who has wronged them, he puts them in touch with a swordsman who can do the job for a fee.

An event fifteen years in the making, Ashes of Time Redux restores Wong Kar Wai's lone martial arts epic to its full glory. Redux is a "revisiting" of Wong's classic 1994 film, with a tightened edit, an enhanced image worthy of Christopher Doyle's stunning cinematography, and a darker, richer score from composer Wu Tong and cellist Yo Yo Ma. Ashes of Time Redux is worthy of multiple revisits - not only for its brilliant re-imagining of Louis Cha's swordplay heroes, but also for yet another glimpse of the late Leslie Cheung, whose passion never burned brighter than beneath the onscreen guidance of Wong Kar Wai.
