STORY:
First things first - I think this is a great film. I never understood the bad press it seems to always get, despite the fact that its head and shoulders above the likes of "Nothing But Trouble". This was actually the last film Laurel and Hardy ever appeared in. It was made in Europe some five years after the FOX/M.G.M contracts had expired and from the opening scenes, it is very apparent that the restrictions beset upon the boys in their previous few features are no longer in tow. Stan and Ollie are themselves again (as they were in "The Bullfighters") which is a pleasure to see. It is wonderful to witness their charm fully intact for one final fling and a great shame that it had to end here, as it shows the potential the "older" boys could have built upon with there un-materialised TV series. It features perhaps the most complex plot since OUR RELATIONS, and revolves around Stans inheritance of a fortune, a yacht and an un-manned island in the south pacific. After the tax men take all his doe, he sets sail with his pal in search of his island. They are joined aboard by a stateless man and a stow-away Italian (Max Elloy and Adriano Rimald) A huge volcanic storm results in the wreck of their vessle and the creation of an Atoll, which the foursome inhabit and grow to call home. A femail singer (played by Suzy Delair) has a fall out with her fiancee, she joins them on the Atoll and before long Uranium is discoved, and every country is interested in claiming the land. As the stateless man was the first man to step foot on the island, it becomes his own and the boys form their own government who's policies include no taxes, no jails, no passports and no laws - not to mention, no money! As news spreads, the Island becomes crowded with foreigners who eventually bring on a revolution and plan to hang the original four inhabitants. Sadly, Stan was in extremely bad health during filming and appears visually quite disturbing. Despite his obvious ill health and massive weight loss, he still manages to return to his old form. And Ollie is as charming as ever and its great to see his trademark slow burns milked to the full for one last time! The film was made in Europe and has its flaws. A big complication is the fact that all the cast members speak their own language and have had English voices dubbed on later - in fact, Stan and Ollie are about the only actors who's original voices are heard. Originally issued in Europe as ATOLL K, subsequent releases used the title CRUSOE LAND and when issued years later in the States, it was retitled UTOPIA. As this was the last time we would see the boys, it is nice to see that they returned to form and bowed out in very creditable style. In a beautiful tribute to the boys and their long careers together, the very last scene they ever performed on screen ends with the timeless exchange: Utopia (also known as Atoll K and Robinson Crusoe Land) is last film Laurel and Hardy made together. It was filmed and produced in Europe.
