Up until The Legacy of Otis Redding (2007), there have been precious few opportunities for modern eyes and ears to behold the artist in action. The roughly hour-and-a-half "Dreams to Remember" main program is the first biopic documentary spanning Redding's complete career. None of the performances have ever been available to fans and remained completely unseen for the better part of four decades. Thanks to the Herculean efforts of Reelin' in the Years Productions' David Peck and Phillip Galloway as well as the insight of Stax historian and noted journalist Rob Bowman, future generations will be able to scrutinize one of soul music's exceedingly enigmatic figures. Taking a chronological approach, the 17 videos are introduced and coupled with first-person interviews featuring Stax Records co-founder Jim Stewart, Steve Cropper, and Wayne Jackson – the latter pair having regularly played in the studio as well as live with Redding. These are contrasted by comments from Zelma and daughter Karla Redding-Andrews as they offer a personal perspective. There are also a few instances of Otis providing narration or insight from BBC Radio and a very short Q&A with Dick Clark. As was customary practice in the mid-'60s, Redding's television appearances were often lip-synched. Zelma Redding readily points out that Otis was usually unable to replicate ad-libs and even would forget lyrics to his own studio recordings. The results are often noticeable and, frankly, quite charming. Particularly the attempts to fake his way through "Don't Mess with Cupid" from the Nashville-based show The Beat! Granted there isn't a loser (not even remotely so) in the bunch. But that said, several of the live (read: not lip-synched) entries are essential viewing. Namely, the infectiously funky "I Can't Turn You Loose" circa 1966 as a guest on the Cincinnati-originated Upbeat. Plus, "I've Been Loving You Too Long (To Stop Now)" as well as the cover of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction" – from the 1967 London Stax/Volt Review film. And who could forget the mesmerizing take of Sam Cooke's "Shake" from the Monterey International Pop Festival? However, it is unquestionably "Try A Little Tenderness" and "Respect" – from 1967 on Upbeat – that collectively bear the mantle of being the last known footage of Redding. It was filmed less than 24 hours before he and Bar-Kays members Phalon Jones, Carl Cunningham, Jimmy King, and Ronnie Caldwell were killed when Redding's private twin-engine Beechcraft H18 crashed into Lake Monoma near Madison, WI. The interviewees deal with the circumstances personally, compassionately, and with an obvious love for the man and his music.
