Shingo a été élevé par le samouraï Takakura, après avoir été sauvé à la suite de l'exécution de sa mère. Ce fils illégitime maîtrise une prise de sabre presque invincible, et s’en sert pour se battre contre les ennemis, jaloux, de son tuteur. Alors que sa famille adoptive est en danger de mort, il va apprendre par hasard la vérité sur la mort de sa mère…

Ken is the story of Jiro Kokubu, star pupil of the university kendo club, for whom the sport is a way of life. Unwavering in his asceticism, he willingly foregoes girls, parties and rock music, devoting his entire being to the practice of kendo. The other students, in particular a fellow senior named Kagawa, ridicule him behind his back, but are unable to better him in the dojo. On a training trip before a major tournament, where the group is subjected to Kokubu's gruelling regimen, Kagawa rebels, dragging the younger students with him on a collision course with their captain…

Le capitaine Kokubu, maître du club de Kendô à l’université de Tôwa, pratique cette discipline comme un sacerdoce. Mibu, un nouveau membre du club, est en admiration devant Kokubu, et pousse le fétichisme jusqu’à l’imiter dans sa manière de vivre, austère et décalée. Opposé à cette conception, Kagawa ne voit dans le Kendô rien d’autre qu’un sport, et mène une vie sociale active. Il tente de faire succomber Kokubu, dont la dévotion malsaine pour le sabre le répugne, au charme d’une belle étudiante. Rien n’y fait, et au cours d’un entraînement intensif, la rivalité entre Kagawa et Kokubu va prendre une tournure dramatique.
