She wakes up from a coma after five years, without her baby, and sets out for revenge. After regaining strength and aquiring deadly weapons, she tracks down Bill's accomplices, at the same time her follow colleagues, and kills them one after another. Among them are O-Ren, who in the mean time became the head of the Yakuza, Vernita Green, who is now a housewife, and Budd, Bill's brother, who lives a shitty life in a trailer home. Not until the very end, does she get to face her nemesis, to take revenge for all that he has done to her, only to find out about a surprising truth. But she will Kill Bill.

Wikipedia

Kill Bill was created as one film and then released as two volumes. However, it is considered to be one film (the entire saga has also been termed The Whole Bloody Affair). The film in its entirety is divided into ten chapters. The first volume consists of the first five chapters. The second volume is the last 5 chapters. While Volume 1 is a no holds barred, violent Grindhouse Revenge thrill ride, Volume 2 is longer in running time and slows the breakneck speed down to give viewers a more in depth look at the characters Tarantino created. On another level, Volume 1 has a more Asian Kung Fu-Samurai inspired feel while Volume 2 plays more like an American/Spaghetti Western.

Tarantino decided to release a slightly altered version in Japan and some other Asian countries, showing a number of additional scenes of violence, and a full color version of The House of Blue Leaves massacre.

Volumes 1 and 2 of Kill Bill are vastly different pieces of cinema, each with specific strengths over the other. Most notably, the intense gore and action of Volume 1 is seriously juxtaposed in Volume 2 by long scenes of witty dialogue and plot development. I wasn't surprised at all to find that some non-Tarantino fans who loved the action of Volume 1 found Volume 2 disappointing. It's a matter of personal preference, and for me Volume 2 is by far the superior of the two. It contains much more of Tarantino's signature dialogue exchanges, interesting characters and dramatic tension - which is essentially what I loved about Tarantino's work in the first place. Such arguments will eventually become obsolete, as the film will undoubtedly be spliced together in the future to create a complete, single film. That, my friends, will be worth seeing.

Perhaps the most highly anticipated film of 2003, Kill Bill Vol. 1 marked the return of renowned filmmaker Quentin Tarantino after a six-year hiatus. Re-teaming the director with Uma Thurman for the first time since 1994's Pulp Fiction, the film was originally the first half of what was to be a three-hour-plus movie before being split into two films. Thurman stars as The Bride, one-fifth of a team of assassins called DiVAS. When The Bride opts to leave the outfit for a life of marital bliss, it doesn't sit well with her boss, Bill (David Carradine), so he has her former cohorts, played by Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah, and Michael Madsen, show up at the nuptials, leaving behind a blood bath. Miraculously, The Bride survives a bullet to the head and, four years later, she sets out for revenge against her four assassins and their employer. The story is concluded in Kill Bill Vol. 2, released six months later.

One of the best descriptions of Kill Bill I have seen comes from an internet forum, where a member compared it to having sex with a prostitute: fun while it lasts, yet ultimately superficial. The film is essentially an extremely visceral audio-visual treat, referencing everything from Hong Kong martial arts movies to Japanese anime to Westerns. The plot is pretty lightweight, relying on the over-the-top nature of its presentation to give it weight. In a sense, the enjoyment is derived not from finding out what will happen but how it will happen. We’re never in any doubt that the Bride will accomplish her goals, but seeing how she gets there is extremely enjoyable, thanks to the excellent cinematography, choreography and some ridiculously exaggerated gore.

The film also experiments a great deal with the order of the narrative and the way in which it is told. For instance, the rather anticlimactic confrontation with Vernita Green is in fact placed before either the fight with O-Ren or indeed the Bride’s escape from hospital after she awakens from her coma, despite the fact that, in chronological terms, it is actually the final event of the movie. Presumably, this unusual structure is the result of ordering the sequences in a way to make them more interesting. It works, whatever the motive. Furthermore, the back-story of O-Ren is told via animation, and is narrated by the Bride (while she is trying to regain control of her dead legs shortly after waking up, no less) – a highly effective deviation from the rest of the film.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

But for all Kill Bill’s flashy photography and choreography, it would be nothing if not for Uma Thurman. She carries most of the movie single-handed, injecting charisma into her character and making you genuinely root for her. It’s not all just sword-waving and striking epic poses: there are some moments that genuinely tug at your heartstrings, such as the moment the Bride realizes that, while she has been comatose for four years, she has been repeatedly raped under the supervision of one of the hospital’s nurses. The film may be completely surreal, but it has heart too, and I think that for a lot of people this may have got lost amongst all the carnage. The supporting cast are very good too, but this is her movie, and none of the other players have the screen time or the presence that she has.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

If Kill Bill has any real problems, it’s that it often doesn’t seem to be sure whether it wants to mock or to pay homage to the films it references. The tone is a bit inconsistent, to the extent that, when victims of the Bride are writhing on the floor, limbs missing and blood spraying everywhere like a hose, it’s difficult to know whether to be shocked or to laugh out loud. This film is definitely going to illicit very different responses from different people. There are also a number of moments that seem to be deliberately corny or badly done; for example, the Bride’s dialogue with Vernita Green near the start of the film sounds like the kind of thing you could expect to hear in a bad soap opera. I also absolutely loved one shot late in the movie that showed clearly visible strings holding up an aeroplane. Genius!

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

Overall, Kill Bill Vol. 1 is not a particularly clever film, but it is a well-made one, and the punch it packs in terms of style certainly makes up for the relative shortcoming of its plot. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing Volume 2 and seeing how things turn out. The final outcome is pretty inevitable, I guess, but the ride, so far, has been well worth it.

There were five on her list. Now it's three. O-Ren Ishii and Vernita Green were the first to fall, now The Bride is out to finish the job by killing Elle Driver, Budd, and last of all, Bill. If the final three aren't afraid now, they better start, because she's coming for them. However, something has thrown off her plans a bit. Her daughter (whom she was pregnant with as she was getting married) is still alive. What affect this will have on her quest for vengeance is unclear, but the question is, will The Bride have actually succeeded in completing her ultimate goal, to kill Bill?

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

Vol. 2 is a good deal less gory than its predecessor, offering something of a contrast between their Japanese and Western (Spaghetti and American) influences. That said, the fight between Elle Driver and the Bride, which I'm sure most people have at least heard about by now, is comically violent in the extreme, and the exact details of her demise (or is it?) are sure to set the more squeamish of viewers squirming. As a result, there is nothing as outlandish as the anime sequence or fight in the House of Blue Leaves from Vol. 1, meaning that, this time round, no extra-gory cut was prepared for Japanese audiences. Particularly impressive is the cinematography of Robert Richardson, who matches the look of the various segments to the sources they imitate in a way that makes them look genuine. The Pai Mei sequence, for example, designed as an homage to Kung-Fu movies from the 70s, features copious use of silhouettes and rear-projection, and a rough, grainy film stock.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

Yet, for all its well-choreographed action, sumptuous photography and witty repartee, the film is held together by the convincing performances of its leads. Uma Thurman once again excels as the Bride, treading the fine line between sincerity and melodrama. Some of the lines she has to spout border on the ridiculous, but she delivers them with so much conviction that you can't help but believe in her as this character. ("What the fuck did you just shoot me with?" gets my award for most hilariously-read line of the year.) It's also quite incredible to see her effortlessly switch between the steely-eyed assassin of the present day and her younger, slightly goofy counterpart in the flashback showing her training. The real ace in the hole, however, is David Carradine as Bill. After only being treated to fleeting glimpses of him in Vol. 1, it's great to finally meet the man himself. Carradine plays Bill as a level-headed, whimsical fellow, which makes his sudden flashes of malice all the more surprising. Elsewhere, Daryl Hannah, Michael Madsen and the aforementioned Gordon Liu all turn in energetic performances. Indeed, Madsen manages to evoke some pathos via his performance as Budd, the once deadly assassin who now wastes away his life.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

A lot has been made of Vol. 2's pacing, and it's certainly true that it runs slow at times, particularly in comparison to the relatively sprightly Vol. 1. Indeed, the opening sequences, featuring first the run-up to the wedding chapel massacre and then various scenes establishing the character of Budd, seem a little drawn-out. It's clear that Tarantino is in love with his movie and unwilling to trim it down, and although I can certainly see validity in the various criticisms of the collective running time of the two volumes (over 4 hours in total), it certainly makes a change to see a film that runs at its own pace, with each scene taking its time to develop, in comparison to the current minimalist style adopted by most filmmakers. Kill Bill tells the kind of story that, if cut down to its bare minimum, would probably not run for very long at all and would, in my opinion, have been infinitely less satisfying.

Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2 (Japanese Uncut Version) [ReUp]

Overall, Kill Bill Vol. 2 is about the same as Vol. 1 in terms of quality. While it is less consistent overall, featuring more highs and more lows than its predecessor, Vol 2. should appeal to anyone who enjoys excessive style and plenty of fun. It rounds off the saga nicely, tying up its loose ends and providing a more than satisfying conclusion.
