A prostitute (Marie Dubois) picks up a soldier (Claude Giraud), who seduces a housemaid (Anna Karina), who seduces the son of her employer (Jean-Claude Brialy), who visits his lover (Jane Fonda), who sleeps with her husband, who takes a casual pickup (Catherine Spaak) to a private dining room. The pickup is promoted by a playwright (Bernard Noël), who renews an old affair with an actress (Francine Bergé), who is visited by a Count (Jean Sorel), who meets the prostitute. "La ronde" is presented as a cycle of seduction and pleasure.

IMDB

Arthur Schnitzler's play on turn-of-the-century morals and sex and standing gets still another film time around by Robert and Raymond Hakim who produced the first one in 1950. But this is no remake, with early 1900s Vienna replaced by the Paris of 1914 on the eve of the First World War. It shapes as an almost classic French film, insouciant, elegant, witty and one track in its series of seductions as love is handed from one character to another until the round is completed when the last meets the first.

La Ronde (1964)

Roger Vadim's direction stresses the cluttered and cozy decors of the era. His treatment of love is almost modest, to give this a sort of comedic air rather than an ironic undertone.

La Ronde (1964)

A prostie and a soldier have a brief fling, with the soldier seducing a maid who is then taken over by the son of the house. He goes on to a young married woman, then to a girl he has picked up, etc. It all ends with the prostitute again, as he has a drunken night out.

La Ronde (1964)

Jane Fonda is especially beguiling and deceptively naive as the philandering wife, while Anna Karina is a right, waif-like maid. Marie Dubois has the underlying good nature, under a vulgar exterior, as the sentimental prostie. Catherine Spaak depicts an adroit blending of innocence and guile as an emancipated young woman. Francine Berge displays a knowing mixture of sexual appetite and discreet longing as an actress. The men are mainly foils.

Also worth mentioning are Maurice Binder's expertly conceived titles.
