Eternal Return (L'Eternel Retour) translates the Tristan and Isolde legend into contemporary (e.g. 1939) terms. The Tristan counterpart, Patrice (Jean Marais), falls in love with the modern-day Isolde, named Nathalie. Actually he has fallen for two Nathalies: when Nathalie I (Madeleine Sologne) spurns his offer of marriage, he turns his attentions to Nathalie II (Junie Astor). Still carrying a torch for Nathalie I, Patrice attempts a nocturnal rendezvous with his true love on the eve of his wedding. Because of a tragic blunder, Patrice and Nathalie I are reunited only in death. The dream-like quality of Eternal Return is due more to the input of screenwriter Jean Cocteau than director Jean Delannoy. The film, with its mystical trappings and ethereal performances, can now be viewed as a precursor to Cocteau's own Beauty and the Beast.

IMDB

Patrice (Jean Marais) lives in a castle in provincial France with his uncle and poisonous relatives, on of whom is a dwarf. Patrice fulfills his empty life sailing around aimlessly, returning to a secluded island. That is until the day he rescues a lonely woman, Nathalie, from the arms of her abusive, drunkard boyfriend. Patrice takes Nathalie back to his home, and unites her with his uncle Marc, not realising that the two share an inseparable
bond. The marriage between Marc and Nathalie seals the fate of these doomed lovers, and a series of events conspires to keep them apart.

L'éternel retour (1943)

A tragic fable, this French classic was scripted by the great Jean Cocteau, and stars Jean Marais and the Madeleine Sologne as the two doomed lovers, who are thrust together in a moment of despair and longing for meaning. It's beautifully filmed and the leads are mesmerising. The English subtitles have been added from an Australian TV screening, and the DVD, although a little dark, is full of detail and free of damage.

L'éternel retour (1943)

A man finds a wife for his uncle, but ends up falling in love with her himself when he drinks a love potion.

Though it's directed by Jean Delannoy, the script was written by Jean Cocteau, the man responsible for LA BELLE ET LA BETE, and though it lacks the visual splendor of that classic, it still does well enough. It also features Jean Marais from that movie as one of the lovers. It is based on the story of Tristan and Isolde, but I have to confess to not being familiar with that story, so I can't make any comparisons at all. It's a beautiful, moving and sad love story, and the only fantastic element is the love potion (the bottle is marked "Poison") that figures into the plot, so its fantastic element is rather slight. The most memorable character, though, is the unpredictable dwarf son of the relatives, played by Pieral, who also appeared in the 1956 version of THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME.
