    The story of Henri Matisse and Andre Derain, two of the founders of Fauvism, during their collaborative period in Collioure in the south of France in 1905.
    Henri Matisse (1869-1954) arrived in the small and charming Catalan port of Collioure, in the south of France, on 16 May 1905. He soon invited Andre Derain (1880-1954), 11 years his junior, to join him. Derain arrived on 5 July. Matisse later wrote: “Working before a soul-stirring landscape, all I thought of was making my colours sing, without paying any heed to rules and regulations” to describe the feverish power of the pure colours that swept upon them both, drawing them into what the unbridled critics dubbed “la cage aux Fauves” (the wild beasts’ cage). Hence was born Fauvism, a movement that revolutionised modern art.

    Henri Matisse (31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954)
    French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Picasso, as one of the two seminal artists of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.
