With many serpentine twists and turns, this mystery centers on the exploits of a police detective who was convicted of murdering his wife's lover. Following his eventual release, the ex-con is placed under the watchful eye of his female parole officer and gets a job pulling nightwatch at a university. He isn't their long before a coed is found murdered. The prime suspect is a religiously zealous janitor, but the nightwatchman doesn't buy it and launches his own investigation and finds a complex, tangled web of incest, blackmail, rape and political intrigue.
