This French language drama from Portuguese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira takes an ironic look at the pretentiousness of international jet-setters while simultaneously examining an obsessive romantic relationship between an aging Lothario and a beautiful married woman. The tale begins at a garden party in a lovely villa in the Azores held by Rogerio and Leonor for handsome, middle-aged Michel and his mistress Irene, a noted Greek movie star. The guests aren't there long before an obvious attraction between Leonor and Michel prompts them to head for a private beach (their tryst, if there was one, occurs off-camera). Five years later, the foursome again meet for a garden party and once again they pair off after spending much time discussing gender differences, emotion, social insight and exchanging witty bon mots.

Party (1996) [Re-UP]

The first Oliveira movie I saw (about some 10 years ago; I have since seen several more of his movies and come to consider him a major director), I can't say I remember much of the plot, but the movie started with a beautiful shot of the waves breaking at the rocks of some cliff in the Portuguese coast. The film is basically about two couples, a young one and an old one (the lovely - and Oliveira regular - Leonor Silveira, Rogerio Samora, Michel Piccoli and Irene Papas) in two extended sequences. The first sequence happened in a garden party of some sort by the sea that is interrupted by a storm, the other happens some time later in a castle. The second sequence showed some argument between the couples, involving jealousy of some sort about something that happened in the first sequence. It is a talky movie, but even if I can remember the movie in all its details, I definitely remember being surprised at the unusual rhythm brought forward by this unique director.

––––––––––––––––––––––
This is one of Manoel de Oliveira's most obscure films (and many would say that de Oliveira is obscure himself), but it's really quite good and it falls well in the Manoel de Oliveira universe. I didn't really care for it the first time I saw it, but subsequent viewings of it have made me change my mind. It seems like a simple film on the surface, but it's really quite complex and fascinating, like all of de Oliveira's films. This creates an incredible tension between the characters where one feels that violence can break out at any time, but it never does. It's masterful filmmaking from one of the greatest directors working today.

Party (1996) [Re-UP]

The film is about two couples, and their power struggles. There are only two scenes. The first one takes place at a dinner party on the Portuguese coast where there's a power struggle between Michel Piccoli, Irene Papas, Leonor Silveira, and Rogerio Samora. After a storm cancels out the dinner party, the film jumps several years to a castle, where the dialogues and the struggles between the couples begin anew. The 2nd half of the film is much more startling than the first, as de Oliveira's framing, lighting, and amazingly subtle rhythms really take hold of the film. The 2nd half is reminiscent of The Convent, where the scenes are very dark, yet, they are illuminated just enough that you can see everything that is going on.

Party (1996) [Re-UP]

Anyone interested in de Oliveira's work should seek this film out. It's one of his most underrated.

Party (1996) [Re-UP]

Words, words and more words. Phrases like rivers of lava which engulf all that lies in their path. Manoel de Oliveira's new film is a verbal parade in which four characters tangle with every shade and nuance of love and desire… Seduction, they say, is a much more complex and unpredictable art than it seems… Here, the mind speaks louder than the heart… Repartee counts for more than the amorous destiny of this talkative foursome for whom the act itself is another story entirely. In a supremely elegant setting, framed with careful refinement, Manoel de Oliveira films dialogue. In the guise of stylistic effect he indulges in the occasional fight of strange fantasy, his trademark of sorts… For the actors, Michel Piccoli and Irène Papas in particular, the text is a veritable feast, and Oliveira himself seems to have really relished seeing these "warriors of the word" putting their hearts into it.
