REMBETIKO sparked a rediscovery of rembetika music, the Greek blues. This passionate, soulful music, born of the plight and pain of the poor, captured the hearts and imaginations of the Greek people. Costas Ferris s classic film is the tale of a Greek singer s remarkable career from the backstreet taverns of Pireas to the nightclubs of Chicago.
Rembetiko is a historical movie which shows what life was like for Greeks in the early parts of the 20th Century. It shows what a lounge looked like and the people that occupied the lounge. It is a story of what is the meaning of Rembetika and it gives the audience an understanding of Music from the Greek underworld. The movie shows the social, psychological, political and economic hardships facing Greek Society during that era. A must have for any student of history who wants to learn about poverty and hardships in Greece then and the relevance it has to today's economic crisis.Review by Born in Canada …Made in Greece, Amazon.com
This movie is absolutely the best in historical detail and realism. Yes, the film takes some reasonable liberties to make the story hang together and to convey the deep meaning that a documentary just could not convey. I have seen Rebetiko documentaries and they are good but you simply can't get from them what you get out of this movie. It is not simple entertainment but true art with the fantastic music of the true Rebetiko mixed with the real grit of history. It is raw and intense without the need for today's high technology special effects. The acting is superb and is on par with the best Hollywood can muster today. It is truly amazing considering the budget and technology the director had to work with and is a real credit to the Greek Film industry. It has drama, music, action, and a touch of dry humor that you just don't find in many movies anymore. This is definitely worth the price and for those of us that love Rebetiko, it is too good to pass up. I watch it over and over again. I just cannot say enough good things about this movie.Review by Francis L. Mayer, Amazon.com
