Señoritas is a subtle, contemplative and deeply intimate examination of the way one young woman navigates the daunting terrain of sex, desire and identity.
Señoritas opens with the image of a woman traveling by night. We aren’t told what it is she’s escaping or where she’s headed and little does it matter. For a whole two-and-a-half minutes the camera is trained on Alejandra’s face, which holds clues to understanding a screenplay that dwells more on situations than fact, and allows each of these situations to work itself out within the shot itself. This explains the reduced number of scenes, some 20 in all, nearly all of which are resolved with one, two or three shots. The spectator is purposefully deprived of information, so as to preserve the mystery surrounding what García Márquez once referred to as our “inner lives”. A sensitive, intelligent study of the female universe, whose actors plumb unprecedented depths of truth and sincerity. “What interests me most about filmmaking is the process of discovery and the hope that the actions and relationships described on paper will soak up mystery and life once they are inhabited by people of flesh and blood,” says the director. A surprising and promising first film, whose methodology and cinematographic style are reminiscent of John Cassavetes.
