This movie deals with the difficult subject of "assisted suicide" (which is legal in Holland)
This is dealt with in a deeply emotional and yet pragmatic and realistic - and sometimes comical - manner. The difficult decisions which must be taken and the effects on the patient and all people around him are very realistically portrayed in this movie. An important contribution to the debate, imo.
Plot:
Camiel is hit by Simon in his car and this sets off their unique friendship. Its clear from the outset that these two main characters are very different. Camiel is reasonably serious; running an Amsterdam coffee shop, Simon on the other hand is blunt, offensive, but possess charisma and a sense of humour that make him impossible not to like, and their friendship evolves.
Simon and Camiel’s companionship suffers a set back and they meet again after 14 years of separation. Their friendship is effortlessly rekindled but is over-shadowed by a serious illness ….
