Jake Barnes (Tyrone Power), a journalist from the United States, comes out of World War I injured and disillusioned. Rather than return home, he chooses to leave his past behind and move to Paris, where he meets an aimless group of bohemian expatriates. Together, they pursue a hedonistic, directionless lifestyle until Brett's affection for Jake complicates matters.
