    Reno, dans le Nevada. L'heure de la retraite a sonné pour l'inspecteur Jerry Blake, qui rassemble ce jour-là ses affaires à son bureau avant d'affronter le pot d'adieu qu'ont organisé ses collègues. Lesquels se sont cotisés pour lui offrir un séjour au Mexique, où il pourra s'adonner à la pêche au gros. La petite fête bat son plein quand Jerry apprend de son supérieur que le corps d'une fillette, assassinée après avoir été violée, a été retrouvé dans la montagne enneigée. Il obtient d'accompagner Stan Krolak sur les lieux et se porte volontaire pour annoncer la terrible nouvelle aux parents de la victime. Après avoir juré à ceux-ci de retrouver le coupable, il renonce à ses vacances…
