A group of travelers from the United States race through seven countries in 18 days. Included in the group are Samantha Perkins, a lovely young miss who finds time for some romance with handsome Britisher Charlie Cartwright; Jenny Grant, an elderly lady with energy to spare; Harve and Irma Blakely, a married couple who get separated; and John Marino, an Italian-American who almost gets married off while visiting relatives in Venice.

"IF IT'S TUESDAY, This Must Be Belgium" may be the first cartoon caption ever made into a feature-length movie. If I remember correctly, that was the legend that appeared some years ago under a New Yorker Magazine cartoon showing two harried American travelers, in the middle of a relentlessly picturesque village, consulting their tour schedule.

It was a nice cartoon, made timely by the great wave of tourism that swept Europe in the 1950's. Subsequently, I'm told, there was a television documentary that explored more or less this same phenomenon—the boom in pre-paid (two in a room), packaged culture junkets.

Now, some years after the subject seemed really fresh, a movie has been made about one such 18-day, 9-country excursion.

Even if you don't accept the fact that just about everything that could be said about American tourism was said earlier by Mark Twain, Henry James or even Woody Allen, "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" is a pretty dim movie experience, like a stopover in an airport where the only reading matter is yesterday's newspapers.

The caricatures of familiar stereotypes, however, are acted with an enthusiasm by an attractive cast, including Suzanne Pleshette, Mildred Natwick, Peggy Cass, Murray Hamilton, Sandy Baron and Marty Ingels. A young English actor, Ian McShane, is particularly good as the indefatigable tour guide, and Reva Rose, who played the irritable Lucy in Off Broadway's "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," is appealing as a totally humorless girl who gets lost early in the trip and winds up touring with a group of Japanese.

The movie has been written (by David Shaw) and directed (by Mel Stuart) in conventional television sketch style, which means that it depends more on our familiarity with standard tourism humor than on any especially original ideas. The film does possess a decent visual quality, having been photographed in soft, pastel colors in both rain and brilliant sunlight in London and on the continental locations (Amsterdam, Brussels, the Alps, Rome and Venice) visited by the bus-touring junketeers.

I saw this film 2 or 3 times when first released with my parents. They were not ones to pay for a movie twice, but they did on this one. Very funny from start to finish, with another great ensemble cast, and a ton of cameos. I discovered Iam McShane in this film, who is now currently on PBS is a mystery series from the BBC. I've always loved Suzanne Pleshette, and she is a delight in a romp with a very buxom Italian lady who has poor Suzanne land in a fountain after their little car accident in Rome (POLICIA!). Reva Rose gave poor Norman Fell (Mr. Roper on Three's Company) a run for his money by joining the wrong tour in Amsterdam, and actually passing each other on different boats on the Rhine. Peggy Cass is married to Murray Hamilton (pre-Jaws) who keeps threatening to "Get her for this". A lovely lively romp and so much better than the TV Movie remake.

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969) [Re-UP - OUT OF PRINT]

I have no idea. But I know that I first saw that movie as a child, shortly after it came out, and never stopped loving it. I think the best word to describe the entire film is "colorful". The cast is, the characters are, the cinematography is, the script is. I bought a copy a few years back and every 6 months or so, I just have to pop it in, jump into bed with my wife and a bowl of popcorn and enjoy it again. The movie hasn't aged well at all but as another reviewer said, it's a pure time capsule of 1969 and that in itself is a great positive attribute.

If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium (1969) [Re-UP - OUT OF PRINT]

It was an important movie of its generation (1969) because of the cast, the color of Europe at that time and the understanding of tourism industry. It was a farce that rivals "The Russians are Coming…" and while there is a remake that was done in 198-, it does not reflect the time of the generation of the 60's, nor the understanding between Europe and America. (Not to mention the tension of the Vietnam war). I'd admit that the comedy is close to Jimmy Stewart and Sandra Dee's Movie (forgot the title), yet I would argue that they were not the same. This movie is no longer being released in any format, nor available in libraries. I feel that as an Anthorpologist, this is a loss to our culture and society towards understanding the era of 60's.
