After leaving their company Christmas Party together, David Hargrove and Emily Brandt's impromptu first date takes an unexpected turn when their coworker, Corey, asks them to make a late-night stop at an ATM. What should be a routine transaction turns into a desperate struggle for survival when an unknown man appears outside the vestibule. With the wintry temperatures dipping below freezing, and the morning sunrise still hours away, they have no choice but to play the man's deadly game of cat-and-mouse.

Every circumstance in life is really the convergence of random events to some extent. Although we strive to be the masters of our own destiny and control our outcomes, and even convince ourselves that we are doing just that, anything that happens or exists in our lives in one instant can be traced back to dozens of preceding actions that all had to occur for this instant of now to happen. If one of those variables had changed, the entire outcome would have changed, for instance if you hadn’t forgotten the lightbulbs at the grocery store then you wouldn’t have gone back to the store, taken a different route because of a construction zone, run that yellow light and got in that fender bender.
Emily (Alice Eve), Corey (Josh Peck) and David (Brian Geraghty) are all together in the wrong place at the wrong time, an isolated ATM machine at 2:00 in the morning after the office Christmas party, and become trapped inside the protective structure by a killer stalking and tormenting them outside. What follows is a night of desperate attempts to escape with their lives.
Although there are scenes leading up to the office party where the trio become linked by a series of decisions and events, the bulk of the action takes place in and around the ATM structure. It is the performances of the three leads that need to carry ATM, and for the most part they do pretty well. Josh Peck plays the smart-alec leader, not in a masculine and capable way but rather in the modern “I’ve never had real hardship or had to work terribly hard in my life so I believe I am in command of this world” way that we see today in so many youngish city dwellers and college students.
Peck captures the snark of this archetype well. Geraghty, on the other hand, is the sidekick who wants to have testicles but can’t manage to remember to bring them along, so instead is regularly railroaded by his friend. Let’s face it, being the weak one under the poor excuse for a man consumed by his own entitlement like Peck’s character is really weak, and that is Geraghty’s character. Finally we have Emily by Alice Eve, a young woman who believes that if one does what they are supposed to do and follows the rules that everything will turn out alright, not knowing how to handle things not going according to plan. So unfair.
The story is an interesting mix of the horror faced by three victims of an unknown tormentor, the convergence of random events with a tragic result and even commentary on the cultural state of mind that there will always be someone to come to the rescue if things get out of hand. As a side note, if one of the three had a right to carry permit and a 9MM, ATM would have been a short film.
It is important that both the opening and closing credits be paid attention to in ATM as both the set up and the final irony are revealed here, so make sure you plan accordingly. This is a good film with acceptable performances that appear to be frustrating at first, before it is remembered that most people are really like this. Hints of reality are much more horrifying than pure fiction.
