Tomorrow's Children (1934)
Director: Crane Wilbur
Stars: Diane Sinclair, Donald Douglas, John Preston
In Tomorrow’s Children, the topic of forced sterilization is explored, as the Board of Health rounds up a number of candidates to keep off the stork’s list. Maybe you come from a poor household, maybe you’re a total slut, maybe you’re a juvenile delinquent, or maybe you’re just bananas, but when the good doctor arrives, your right to bear children comes to an end. But can the Board of Health decide who is fit & unfit to have children, or will a revolution come to pass, ensuring that any insane, delinquent, piss poor whore can have a litter of her own?
Alice Mason (Diane Sinclair) sure has her share of problems. She's the only one in her family who has a job; mom and dad spend the day guzzling cheap hootch and Dad won't even help clean the house because, he says, "That's no job for a man." Alice would like to marry her truck driver boyfriend Jim (Donald Douglas) but that would mean leaving her family alone. A well meaning but misguided doctor reports to the court that Alice's family is made up of "drunks, cripples and idiots" and suggests that the whole family be ordered by the court to be sterilised to prevent them for siring any more societal misfits like themselves.
Science fiction? A look into a possible Orwellian future? A warning against a Totalitarian government? Sorry but this is all true! When this movie was made 28 states had laws allowing mandatory sterilisation of criminals and people the courts deemed "unfit".
Okay now back to the review. As always the government is far from perfect. A drooling, hollow eyed psychotic is spared having to go under the knife even after he nearly assaults a nurse. Why? Because his dad is rich and slips the judge a big role of bills! Sadly Alice has no one to intercede for her except her boyfriend. Lucikly Jim learns an important clue about Alice from her drunken mother. Ah, but will he be in time to save her from the operation? For cryin' out loud Jim, drive faster!
Director Crane Wilbur was the brave hero in the action serial THE PERILS OF PAULINE (1914). He began to divide his time between acting and directing and this Poverty Row short is one of his efforts. He also went on to direct the 1959 remake of THE BAT; this one, starring Vincent Price, is the best remembered of all the versions.
Comedian Sterling Holloway pops up in a supporting role as an overworked intern whose efforts to take a much needed nap are constantly being spoiled. A year earlier Mr. Holloway had appeared in a musical number in the multi-starred comedy INTERNATIONAL HOUSE. He would go on to be the voice of Winnie The Pooh in several made for TV cartoons.
Sure TOMORROW'S CHILDREN is exploitation at its scariest but it's also a look into a dark aspect of past society.IMDB Reviewer,

The Story of the D.E. 733 (Ship of Shame) (1942)
Stars: Keefe Brasselle, Cliff Clark, Dorothy Granger
As far as The Story of the D.E. 733, a.k.a. USS VD: Ship of Shame, this was a government produced program to warn against the practice of sailors shagging the local chicks while on shore leave. You’ll see some actual disease footage, which is always wince inducing and while the subject matter is dead serious, this is just too comical to believe. A gem of government brilliance, this alone is worth the price of this entire collection.
"Don't forget…put it on before you put it in." So is the the message of this film made for the US Navy! This is one of those films meant to warn soldiers about the dangers of VD as well as how to avoid it by using the doctor's advice and a little bit of common sense. Seen today, some of this is still a bit shocking–after all, the film is pretty blunt and it's difficult to imagine our parent, grandparents and great-grandparents doing THAT back then! Well, interestingly enough, the outbreak of sexually transmitted diseases among WWI troops was so widespread that Hollywood helped out with the war effort by making this film–and as a result, STD rates were lower during the Second World War.
Now this is NOT a film for the squeamish, as it is very explicit and shows some amazingly disgusting images–such as a close up of a guy's penis with a discharge of pus due to Gonorrhea as well as open sores–yuck!! And, despite being a Hollywood-produced film, the language is very blunt–but they knew when they made movies like these that they were not for general consumption. Soldiers probably would not have been shocked with all the cursing. Frankly, this film is still pretty timely when seen today–and I think teens would probably benefit from seeing it as they could probably use a gold old fashion shock to their belief that "it can't happen to me"! Overall, actually a very good film considering what it is–and despite its heavy-handed narration.
My only complaint about the film is that they didn't say where the sailors all went on this shore leave–it must have been one horribly filthy town since almost EVERYONE on board came down D at the same time!! I sure don't want to visit THAT place! Surely this is one evil city!! Because the film is high on the yuck factor, remember this before you watch this one–though the information is essentially correct.IMDB Reviewer
