    Released within five years of Janis Joplin's tragic death in 1970, this documentary is more celebration than investigation. But, the film provides ample opportunity to read between the lines in various interviews, rehearsals and state performances and to understand something of the sadness that persisted beneath Joplin's brash exuberance.

    This documentary uses interviews and rare concert footage to reveal Janis Joplin's life, philosophy, and attitudes. It traces the blues singer from childhood, through her performances with Big Brother and the Holding Co., to superstardom after Woodstock. Contains 14 songs including "Piece of My Heart," "Me and Bobby McGee," "Tell Mama," and "Ball and Chain."
